About The Position

As a member of the Bioprocessing Collaboration Center (BCC), you will develop and drive implementation of innovative upstream bioprocessing solutions! You will act as technical lead on multiple projects. Investigate, create, and develop new scientific methodologies in a cross-company team environment. This role focuses on the evaluation and contribution to the evidence generation of Single Use Technology (SUT) and supporting systems including automation and process analytical technologies. Additionally, you will test novel bioreactors, and control strategies to enhance process intensification and continuous processing strategies as well as drive early adoption of new technologies at both the Pharma Services Group internally as well as at leading biotechnology companies externally. Location: On-site in St. Louis, MO. Relocation assistance is NOT provided. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, which includes a drug screening. A Day in the Life As a team, we collaborate on experiments showcasing the capabilities and benefits of Thermo Fisher’s technologies! Serve as in-house technical experts in applied biotechnology and process development by working with Process Development and Manufacturing groups to solve process challenges. As an individual you will conduct sophisticated analyses to support testing and development of SUT systems. Record results in electronic notebook accurately, clearly, and regularly, and reviews documentation by others. Summarize results by preparing internal and externally facing materials such as presentations, protocols, reports, and white papers. Communicate results to people with both technical and non-technical backgrounds. We also effectively network with colleagues from Bio Design Centers (BDC) and R&D sites globally to build effective shared technical resources and remain current in the field by reviewing relevant scientific literature and attendance at appropriate scientific seminars and conferences. May travel up to 25% as the need arises.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biology or related field with 5+ yrs, Masters with 3+ yrs, Ph.D. with 1+ yrs. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and work experience may be considered.
  • Experience with performing standard upstream unit operations (Fed-batch and perfusion cell culture, depth filtration) at bench and pilot scale including AMBR systems.
  • Experience with various upstream unit operation control software (DeltaV experience preferred)
  • Advanced and deep knowledge of multifaceted aspects or a specialized aspect of Single Use Technologies and solid understanding of principles of cell culture, including perfusion.
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong MS Excel experience.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to adhere to standards procedures.
  • Ability to design complex studies and to analyze and summarize scientific data.
  • Ability to author reports, procedures, and other documents.
  • Ability to lead and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Ability to function in a constantly evolving cross company matrixed environment.
  • Position requires ordinary ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about office locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; manipulation (lift, carry, move) of light to medium weights of 10-35 pound pounds; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp and type for prolonged periods of time; visual acuity to use a keyboard, computer monitor, operate equipment, and read materials for prolonged periods of time; ability to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear for prolonged periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with HPLC-based protein analytics preferred
  • PAT experience preferred
  • Automation experience including DeltaV preferred
  • Experience with DOE is preferred.
