The Community Development & Housing internship will provide meaningful support to the department by assisting with daily operations, special projects, and technical research. This role is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in a professional setting and is ideal for students pursuing degrees in planning, public administration, or related fields. Interns will gain exposure to community and neighborhood activities, housing development, zoning, permitting, and GIS mapping while assisting with the implementation of community initiatives. This position offers a comprehensive look at local government operations, allowing the selected candidate to develop professional skills applicable to a career in public service.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Urban Studies, GIS, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for report preparation and team collaboration.
  • Interest in local government and community development.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with GIS software is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Project Support: Assist with ongoing research and development for the 5-year housing implementation strategy.
  • Technical Analysis: Conduct data analysis and create maps and presentations using GIS software.
  • Development Services: Exposure to permitting and plan review processes to understand the lifecycle of municipal development.
  • Field Work: Participate in site visits and field observations to see community development projects in action.
  • Research & Documentation: Provide general organizational support, including research, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Collaboration: Support other community development-related and local government activities as assigned to meet departmental needs.
