About The Position

Join the Wildest Team in Town! SSA Group at Utah's Hogle Zoo is looking for an experienced Catering Captain to join our team! SSA Group partners with zoos, aquariums, museums, and other cultural attractions to enhance dining, retail, admissions, and more. With over 50 years in the business, we’ve refined the basics while pioneering new ways forward. This is a part-time, seasonal position. Full-time hours are available during peak season; off-season hours will be limited and assigned based on availability and performance.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a guest-focused mindset.
  • Proven leadership abilities with a commitment to team building and partnership development.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible and effective in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in operating necessary catering equipment.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and handle lifting (up to 35 lbs).
  • Availability to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Quick to learn and perform a variety of tasks.
  • 1-2 years of catering or event experience.
  • Food service or customer service experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) preferred.
  • Food Handler Certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Sips and Tips Certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee product quality, inventory levels, and event execution.
  • Fulfill guest needs efficiently and resolve complaints effectively.
  • Manage the setup, execution, breakdown, and cleanup of buffets, stations, and other food & beverage services.
  • Lead communication between back-of-house and front-of-house teams to ensure timely and accurate food delivery.
  • Supervise buffet attendants and food runners during events.
  • Interpret and execute Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) to the organization’s high standards.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of menus, food presentation, and food service techniques.
  • Perform manual labor as required (equipment storage, event setup, teardown of tables and chairs).
  • Support catering management in supervising and training staff across all departments.
  • Evaluate event successes and challenges and provide constructive feedback.
  • Solve problems during events and implement creative solutions.
  • Maintain a professional, friendly, and approachable demeanor with clients, guests, and staff.
  • Ensure effective communication across all team members for overall event success.
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency and uphold a professional appearance.
  • Adhere to all company policies and safety practices.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Promote an inclusive and supportive approach within the team, fostering continuous networking across units.
  • Focus on removing barriers and creating growth opportunities for team members.
  • Lead by example through sustainability and conservation efforts, educating staff as needed.
  • Engage in community initiatives and encourage opportunities to give back.
