About The Position

We are currently hiring a Part‑Time Food Service Assistant I (Catering Assistant) to join our Food & Nutrition Services team at our Newark campus. The Catering Assistant supports the catering team in the preparation, setup, service, and breakdown of catered events. This role ensures events are executed efficiently while maintaining high standards of food quality, presentation, cleanliness, and customer service. This position requires working 8‑hour shifts on a rotating schedule based on departmental needs. Required Shifts (candidates must be available to work a combination of the following): 5:30 AM – 2:00 PM 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM 10:30 AM – 7:00 PM 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM Weekend and holiday rotation required.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year of catering or food service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Basic knowledge of food safety practices preferred
  • Ability to lift, carry, and walk with weights up to 30 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Event Preparation & Setup Assist with preparing food items, beverages, and catering supplies
  • Set up buffets, beverage stations, and service areas according to event specifications
  • Ensure equipment, linens, and décor are clean, organized, and presentable
  • Service Support Provide friendly, professional customer service during catered events
  • Replenish food, beverages, and supplies as needed
  • Assist guests with basic inquiries to ensure a positive experience
  • Breakdown & Cleanup Break down event setups in a timely and organized manner
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, and utensils
  • Return catering equipment and supplies to designated storage areas
  • Kitchen & Operational Support Assist kitchen staff with basic food preparation tasks as needed
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines
  • Support inventory organization and restocking of catering supplies
  • Delivery & Logistics Assist with loading and unloading catering vehicles
  • Transport food and equipment to and from event locations
  • Ensure accuracy of orders and proper handling during transport
