About The Position

The Casualty Litigation Specialist exercises independent discretion or judgment in handling complex, high exposure and high severity claims. This role oversees a majority of cases in litigation and works closely with outside counsel. This role also assists or acts on behalf of the Claims Supervisor, Manager, or Claims Director as needed.

Requirements

  • Four-year college degree; or comparable claims work experience.
  • Over 7 years’ experience in progressive claims roles; Prior experience in Casualty (Construction Defect, General Liability, Employers’ Liability and Auto Liability) Claims.
  • Knowledge in the legal field; Expertise in areas of coverage, statutory laws, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Adjuster License in DE, NC, SC, KY and WV preferred.

  • AIC and pursuit of CPCU preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts prompt and thorough investigations of complex and high exposure casualty claims within departmental and regulatory guidelines.
  • Effectively communicates through telephone, written, and other communication methods with policyholders, claimants, attorneys, witnesses, and others with pertinent information.
  • Provides quality claims service to our policyholders and agents by remaining in constant communication with them throughout the claim lifecycle and litigation process.
  • Oversees cases in litigation ensuring proper handling by outside counsel while collaborating in the development of the litigation strategy and plan of action.
  • Analyzes information to evaluate assigned claims to determine the extent of loss, taking into consideration coverage, liability, damages and future investigation needs.
  • Evaluates coverage, determines liability, and utilizes negotiation skills to resolve claims within authority to include the ability to draft the respective communications required on the claim.
  • Displays comprehensive expertise in casualty claims, including mastery of jurisdiction-specific documentation, statutory obligations, and the evolving legal environment affecting casualty litigation.
  • Actively participates in mediations to achieve efficient resolution of claims.
  • Accurately apply the HMIG reserving practice by continually evaluating claim exposure to establish appropriate and timely reserves over the life of the claim.
  • Maintain a claim dashboard and diary to comply with departmental diary procedures.
  • Assess and initiate subrogation and risk transfer strategies as appropriate.
