MORE ABOUT THE ROLE: This position is a “floating” cashier. It is a front-line job located at our Solid Waste Recycling Centers (Foxhole, Compost Central, Hickory Grove, and North Mecklenburg). It requires the ability to work at any of the four sites with little notice. This position may be required to travel to two different locations on a workday. The employee must have the ability to obtain transportation in this case. Work Schedule: The work week schedule for this position is (four 10-hour days) and working most Saturdays is required. All shifts are from 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM; however scheduled days will vary week to week. Position Summary Responsible for accurately assessing and collecting fees at recycling centers and landfill. Involves screening and inspecting loads, calculating disposal fees using the Solid Waste Fee Ordinance, and providing effective customer service. Requires flexibility in work location, including potential travel between sites, and includes working most Saturdays. Ability to work independently and make informed decisions based on established policy and procedure. Requires excellent customer service skills with frequent customer interaction.

Requirements

  • Minimum four years' cash handling and customer service
  • High School diploma
  • May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • May require County Driving Privileges
  • Knowledge of Budgetary and accounting principles
  • Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations
  • Governmental accounting procedures and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications
  • The structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Principles and processes for providing customer service

Responsibilities

  • The Weighmaster must possess the ability to work at any of the recycling centers with a varied schedule during daytime hours.
  • As the fee collector, you screen the load to determine if it meets the requirements and what is to be charged. You are required to ask questions and look at loads either physically or using cameras. Enclosed vehicles/trailers should be physically inspected.
  • Training will be provided to become knowledgeable in Solid Waste operations and fee structure.
  • If the load is deemed chargeable, the fee collector determines the amount to be charged using the scales and applicable software. Assess disposal charges based upon established fee schedules. Collect fees from Solid Waste facility users via acceptable payment methods.
  • Accurately manage high volume of transactions.
  • Process a ticket for each transaction using the applicable software.
  • Educate and assist customers with the disposal of certain types of debris.
  • Communicate effectively to correctly inform the public about Solid Waste recycling processes.
  • Perform end-of-day tasks such as completing a collection report, printing and closing batch reports, and running credit card reports.
