This Cashier role involves handling cash transactions, collaborating with yard personnel, recording daily transactions, and maintaining inventory and organization of the scrap yard. Additionally, the position includes responsibilities related to the yard’s truck scale and Non-Ferrous Scale, such as weighing vehicles, sampling inbound materials, maintaining scaling documentation, reviewing loads, upkeeping scale facilities, collecting fees, ensuring legal weight limits, performing safety inspections, assisting with vehicle loading/unloading, keeping the weighbridge area clean, and issuing receipts. The Non-Ferrous Scale Operator specifically inspects and weighs incoming non-ferrous metals, enters commodity codes, and places materials in designated recycling locations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One to three years of previous cash handling experience in retail environment

Nice To Haves

  • College degree in business desirable or equivalent business experience
  • Ability to learn many different types of scrap metal
  • Excellent phone etiquette with clear verbal communication skills
  • Basic math and computer skills necessary
  • Work with various levels of customers with a focus on service

Responsibilities

  • Handle cash transactions: Process payments, issue change, and maintain accurate cash records.
  • Collaborate with team: Work with yard personnel to ensure smooth operations and support team members.
  • Record transactions: Verify cash amounts received and prepare reports for daily transactions.
  • Communicate with staff: Use communication tools like walkie-talkies to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Maintain inventory: Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the scrap yard and maintain accurate inventory records.

  • Reviewing loads and paperwork for inbound and outbound vehicles

  • Collecting fees from drivers and maintaining records
  • Ensuring trucks don't exceed their maximum weight by law
  • Performing safety inspections
  • Assisting in loading and unloading of vehicles
  • Keeping the weighbridge area clean and tidy
  • Issuing receipts to customers
  • Inspects and weighs incoming non-ferrous metals
  • Enters the correct commodity codes
  • Places materials in their designated locations for recycling
