About The Position

This Deaf-Blind Specialist position advocates for and coordinates services to transition-age and adult individuals with deafness and blindness participating in or preparing to participate in a rehabilitation program with a goal of obtaining employment or a program designed for independent living.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a field relative to the program from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related work experience with the client population.
  • OR Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in a related programmatic area providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization.
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison or bridge between the deaf-blind consumer and various service providers with whom that individual must interact in order to obtain the services needed to complete a successful rehabilitation program and remain employed
  • Following rehabilitation case closure; has knowledge of the various aspects of deaf-blindness (medical, social, psychological, communication, educational and cultural)
  • Consults in service delivery to this population and serves as a support person or consultant for other staff serving deaf-blind consumers
  • Identifies individuals with deafness and blindness in the geographic area served
  • Assesses the individual's situation to determine if he or she needs to be linked to a specific service provider
  • Works in partnership with the service providers to ensure that each deaf-blind individual receives and benefits to the maximum extent possible from services
  • Advocates within the community for overall increased and higher quality services and opportunities for deaf-blind individuals Provides training and public education in the area of deaf-blindness.
