Job Title: Case Manager – Mental Health & Wellness Location: Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) Campus Three Star Government Solutions Office Department/Contract: Haskell Indian Nations University Mental Health Services Job Type: [Part-time] Reports to: Clinical Program Manager Position Overview: As the Crisis Case Manager at HINU, you will offer compassionate, culturally informed support to Indigenous college students who may be in crisis. You’ll play a key role in overseeing individualized care, facilitating access to both campus and external mental health resources, and fostering a nurturing environment that balances students' mental wellness, academic success, and cultural identity. In this role, the Crisis Case Manager serves as a frontline responder and care coordinator during acute mental health situations, including after-hours incidents, safety concerns, and periods of heightened distress. This position requires sound judgment under pressure, strong coordination with emergency and campus partners, and a trauma-informed, culturally grounded approach to stabilization, follow-up, and continuity of care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 1–2 years in case management, mental health services, or student support—indigenous-serving higher education preferred.
  • Understanding of Native American cultural practices and mental health issues affecting Indigenous students.
  • Strong assessment, documentation, and case coordination skills.
  • Understanding of tribal and native communities around the prevention of substance use/misuse, prevention of suicide, and promotion of mental health
  • Crisis intervention experience.
  • Familiarity with policies like FERPA, HIPAA; awareness of tribal sovereignty and governance contexts.
  • Commitment to student advocacy, equity, and culturally responsive care.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, grounded, and professional during high-stress or emotionally charged situations.
  • Experience conducting suicide risk screenings, crisis assessments, or safety planning.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain boundaries, and escalate concerns appropriately.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree (MSW, LPC, LMHC) with licensure or license-eligible.
  • Prior campus-based experience, especially at tribal colleges/universities.
  • Training in trauma-informed care and behavioral health.
  • Linguistic or cultural proficiency (e.g., Native languages) or knowledge specific to tribes represented on campus.
  • Familiarity with case management/electronic tools.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Intake and Assessments: Evaluate students’ mental health, academic, and cultural needs through structured interviews.
  • Develop Care Plans: Create tailored, culturally resonant care plans with short- and long-term goals.
  • Crisis Response and Safety Planning: Participate in emergency interventions, including suicide risk situations; coordinate with crisis lines, emergency services, campus security, and clinical leadership; support students through immediate stabilization and transition to ongoing care.
  • Crisis Identification, Response & Stabilization: Crisis Identification & Triage: Identify early warning signs of mental health crises and conduct rapid triage to determine level of risk, urgency, and appropriate response.
  • Immediate Crisis Response: Respond to students experiencing acute distress, including suicidal ideation, emotional dysregulation, trauma reactivation, or substance-related crises, in coordination with clinical staff, campus security, and community crisis services.
  • Safety Planning & De-escalation: Collaborate with clinicians to develop and implement safety plans; utilize grounding, de-escalation, and culturally relevant calming strategies when appropriate.
  • After-Hours Crisis Follow-Up: Review after-hours crisis referrals, conduct timely outreach, assess current safety, and coordinate next steps to ensure stabilization and continuity of care.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Crisis Documentation & Reporting: Complete timely, accurate, and confidential documentation of crisis incidents, referrals, safety plans, and follow-up actions in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA, and institutional protocols.
  • Incident Review & Quality Support: Participate in case reviews, debriefings, and quality improvement processes to strengthen campus crisis response systems.
  • Resource Coordination: Facilitate referrals to the Counseling Center and a wide range of external partners, including: HINU Counseling Center (short-term counseling and referrals) Haskell Indian Health Service (behavioral health providers) Culturally aligned services like smudge rooms and ceremonial spaces used for healing, mindfulness, and spiritual renewal Crisis resources: Willow, Strong Hearts, Lawrence Crisis Center, etc. (available 24/7)
  • Follow-Up & Case Management: Monitor student progress, adjust care plans, and ensure continuity.
  • Cross-Departmental Coordination: Collaborate with Student Success Center, Disability Services, Residence Life, and others.
  • Student Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for students’ mental health, well-being, and cultural needs within university systems.
  • Cultural Competency: Honor and support students’ spiritual and cultural practices, including providing access to smudge or cleansing rooms and traditional healing supports.
  • Education & Training: Offer workshops/consultations to faculty, staff, and student leaders about mental health awareness and culturally responsive support.
  • Support MSW Student Interns: Assist with day-to-day activities of interns, provide appropriate resources and engage in other activities as requested by Clinical Program Manager.
