About The Position

The Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I (ABOS I) is responsible for supervising a team of Benefits Opportunity Specialist (BOS) staff under the direction of the Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist II. The role involves overseeing eligibility determination, financial planning, and employment planning services to assist individuals and families in achieving self-sufficiency. The ABOS I will utilize supervisory, program development, quantitative analysis, and research skills to meet the goals of the Family Independence Administration (FIA) Benefits Access Centers. This position is a provisional appointment, requiring candidates to take and pass an exam to remain in the ABOS title once available.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in social/human services or a related setting.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience in client services or employment planning/counseling.
  • College credit from an accredited college may substitute for experience on a basis of 60 semester credits for 9 months of work experience, but candidates must have at least 18 months of experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist or in social/human services.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of BOS workers handling the application process for new applicants and reopened cases.
  • Assign applications to staff, review recommendations, and sign off on benefits and case entries.
  • Supervise staff who interview applicants and assess eligibility for immediate needs grants and public assistance.
  • Prepare daily and weekly statistical reports and conduct monthly audits.
  • Assist with case consultations and provide guidance on difficult cases.
  • Supervise staff managing ongoing eligibility and developing Employment Assessments and Plans.
  • Review employment eligibility decisions for correctness according to agency and state regulations.
  • Perform Mandatory Dispute Resolution functions.
  • Supervise staff who correspond with homebound clients and provide quick service for walk-in or telephone clients.
  • Supervise staff assessing housing needs of tenants at risk of homelessness and assist in developing intervention plans.
  • Conduct field visits as necessary.
