About The Position

The Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist I (ABOS I) is responsible for supervising a team of Benefits Opportunity Specialist (BOS) staff, who provide various functions of eligibility determination, financial planning, and employment planning and monitoring to assist individuals and families in reaching self-sufficiency. This role is under the direction of the Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialist II and involves using supervisory, program development, quantitative analysis, and research skills to accomplish the goals of the Family Independence Administration (FIA) Benefits Access Centers. The position is a provisional appointment, requiring candidates to take and pass an exam to remain in the ABOS title once available.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in social/human services or a related setting.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience in client services or employment planning/counseling.
  • College credit from an accredited college may substitute for experience on a basis of 60 semester credits for 9 months of work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of BOS workers handling the application process for new applicants and reopened Family Assistance cases.
  • Assign applications to staff, review recommendations, and sign off on benefits and case entries.
  • Supervise BOS workers who interview applicants and assess eligibility for immediate needs grants and public assistance.
  • Prepare daily and weekly statistical reports on work performed and conduct monthly audits.
  • Assist with case consultation and guidance on difficult cases in the case planning process.
  • Supervise BOS workers providing comprehensive service delivery to participants after case establishment.
  • Manage all aspects of case eligibility, assessment, and development of Employment Plans.
  • Review employment eligibility decisions for correctness according to agency and state regulations.
  • Perform the Mandatory Dispute Resolution function.
  • Supervise staff who interview homebound clients and provide quick service for walk-in or telephone clients.
  • Supervise staff assessing housing needs of tenants at risk of homelessness and assist in developing intervention plans.
  • Conduct field visits as necessary.
