About The Position

Under general supervision of the Facilities Project Supervisor, the Carpenter performs a full range of journey-level carpentry work in support of campus facilities across a large, multi-site university environment. The role is responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining structural and finish carpentry elements while ensuring compliance with safety codes and regulations. The position contributes directly to the functionality, safety, and appearance of over 150 acres and 80+ buildings. This role also supports operational efficiency through cost estimation, preventative maintenance, and collaboration with other skilled trades.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, and equipment for rough and finish work
  • Knowledge of applicable California building codes and safety regulations
  • Skill in operating hand and power tools used in carpentry
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications
  • Ability to construct, install, and repair structural and finish carpentry components
  • Ability to estimate project costs, materials, and timelines
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports using manual and computerized systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and apply sound judgment in dynamic environments
  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and driving record that allows for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position

Nice To Haves

  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the carpentry trades
  • Possession of a current California asbestos worker certification
  • Possession of a current California lead worker certification
  • Experience in the maintenance of a State facility, College or University or other commercial, multi-facility complex
  • Four years of journey-level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction related to carpentry

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level carpentry work including construction, maintenance, repair, and remodeling of campus facilities and structures
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to execute carpentry projects accurately
  • Install and repair drywall, ceilings, flooring, roofing, doors, windows, and structural frameworks
  • Fabricate and install cabinetry, counters, partitions, shelving, and related fixtures
  • Inspect completed work and contractor work for compliance with codes, specifications, and safety regulations
  • Estimate labor, materials, and time required for maintenance and construction projects
  • Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles (e.g., lifts, forklifts, utility carts) safely and effectively
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems to document work, track time, and manage assignments
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other trades and departments to complete projects efficiently
  • Train and provide direction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers while maintaining a safe work environment
