About The Position

Loomis Chaffee School is seeking an experienced Carpenter Shop Supervisor to join their community. This is a full-time, 12-month position. This is a Working Carpenter Shop Supervisor role, meaning in addition to performing hands-on carpentry and building maintenance work, this role provides day-to-day shop supervision and operational oversight. The Building Maintenance Staff are responsible for the safe, professional, reliable, efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective maintenance of the buildings on the Loomis Chaffee campus.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities typically associated with three (3) years of material preparation, painting, finishes, and application experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in building maintenance or construction operation in multi-trades (multi-surface preparation, cutting/joining/assembling a wide range of materials, reading a tape measure to 1/16”, use of levels and lasers, sheetrock and taping).
  • Demonstrate proper judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and take the initiative to be productive and continue improving your skill set.
  • Demonstrated good organizational/priority management skills, and oral communication skills, as well as experience needed to predetermine the tools and materials needed to complete a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to analyze situations and information, consider the risks and implications and implement a plan of action.
  • Must be able to work as a team member and effectively with other assigned personnel including faculty, contractors, and students.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to walking around campus, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds or platforms, lifting/carrying heavy objects and working in confined spaces.
  • Willingness to perform other work as required by the department and the Physical Plant.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Training and/or certification in handling lead paint and lead concealment, or willingness to obtain the same.
  • Pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct oversight of daily carpentry shop operations while actively performing carpentry work.
  • Oversee workflow planning, work order oversight, prioritization, and distribution.
  • Provide minor project oversight, including schedule coordination and budget management.
  • Coordinate resources, materials, and staffing to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of work.
  • Perform repairs, maintenance, new construction and renovations pertaining to the Physical Plant.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures as it pertains to Carpenter trade.
  • Properly set-up materials and equipment for the safe completion of work, while ensuring surrounding areas are properly protected.
  • Supports the overall Physical Plant efforts to maintain and improve the facilities and grounds and supports the overall mission of the Institute.
  • Perform repair and maintenance work on building components to include but not limited to windows and doors, various types of flooring, sheetrock & taping, decks, cabinets, etc.
  • Support the activities of the Building Maintenance Department, staff, other personnel, and contractors to ensure effective and efficient maintenance of campus facilities.
  • Support other Physical Plant departments to successively meet deadlines and support the Loomis Chaffee community and the school’s mission.
  • Selecting and purchasing the appropriate quantities and quality of lumber, composites, moldings, flooring and roofing.
  • Ability to safely erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling or repairing structures above ground level.
  • Safe and proper use of handheld and stationary power tools, nail guns and hand tools.
  • Support and assist with special school events as required.
  • Abide by all standards for safety and health guidelines, environmental regulations, quality, and productivity by following established policies and procedures.
  • Perform seasonal tasks as needed, including shoveling, clearing snow and ice from walks, stairs, and pathways.
  • Assist with campus event setups and breakdowns.
  • Perform other work and additional duties as assigned, including assisting other Physical Plant operations to complete assignments and being available for emergencies and scheduled “off-hour” work as needed.
