About The Position

The Career Services Specialist supports students' career development and work-based learning opportunities by providing guidance, resources, and connections to business and industry partners. This position works closely with faculty, staff, employers, and community organizations to promote student success and ensure alignment of career services with academic programs and local workforce needs. Key responsibilities of the Career Services Specialist include coordinating internships by connecting students with employers, facilitating placements, tracking student progress, and supporting students throughout their internship or other work-based learning experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Education, Marketing/Communication, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Effective interpersonal skills-demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, and commitment to career development-and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of current employment trends.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to always operate in a professional manner.
  • Ability to use current educational technologies in the workplace (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Canvas, Target X, Banner etc.)
  • Ability to work and communicate with a variety of people with diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in identifying their interests, values, strengths, and career goals through assessments and one-on-one discussions.
  • Develop opportunities for students to explore various career options and understand the requirements and opportunities associated with each.
  • Assist students in developing effective resumes and cover letters that highlight their skills and experiences relevant to their desired careers.
  • Provide guidance on effective job search techniques, including online job boards, networking, informational interviews, and using social media for professional branding.
  • Serve as a bridge between workforce programs, advising, and employer relations. Lead outreach efforts to ensure that students, faculty, and employer partners are aware of and benefit from career development services.
  • Prepare students for interviews by conducting mock interviews, offering feedback on their performance, and coaching them on how to answer common interview questions.
  • Provide strategies for networking at career fairs, conferences, and online platforms like LinkedIn.
  • Assist students in finding and securing internships or co-op opportunities relevant to their field of study.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local businesses and industries to expand internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Identify gaps in students' skills and recommend relevant workshops, courses, or resources to help them acquire the necessary skills for their chosen career paths.
  • Assist students in developing long-term career plans and strategies for career advancement beyond their initial job placement.
  • Maintain records of student interactions, career outcomes, and other relevant data to track the impact of career coaching services and submit reports as needed.
  • Uphold ethical standards and best practices in career coaching, including maintaining confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest.
  • Actively market and promote career coaching services.
  • Responsible for tracking student interactions, career outcomes, and employer engagement. This data will inform future improvements and contribute to grant reporting requirements. Complete monthly performance tracking.
  • Expand opportunities for students to engage in internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning
  • Seek out, participate, and present at professional development events related to the position.
  • Participate in annual planning and evaluation sessions in support of the College's mission, vision, statement of purpose, and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Transfer and Career Counselor, Director of Advising and Student Success, Dean of Students, or the President.
