Program Summary Subsidized Work Experience and Stipend Learning Opportunities for young people ages 16 to 24 through a suite of programs known as PDX Youth@Work. These programs provide opportunities for career exposure, job readiness and workplace skills practice, professional development and paid Work Experience and Learning Opportunities. The service focus is young people facing barriers to employment, which include but are not limited to: Disability, justice system involvement, immigrant/refugee status, houselessness or engagement with the foster care system. PDX Youth@Work program services include: Learning Opportunities prepare participants for success in the workforce by providing academic and career-related Learning Opportunities. Learning Opportunities are hosted by Service Providers that serve young people in our community and are designed to promote the professional growth and development of participants through practical and hands-on tasks, projects, and applications. Year-round Work Experiences provide subsidized Work Experiences to young people from October through May. Participating on worksites provides a structured working and learning environment, and Career Coaching Contractors provide job coaching and workplace Support Services. SummerWorks is a summer jobs program providing subsidized Work Experience and Learning Opportunities to young people who are motivated to work but lack credentials or experience or networks to find meaningful summer employment on their own. SummerWorks operates from June to September. Position Summary The Career Coach reports directly to the Program Coordinator (PC) or Sector Manager and supports Youth Coaching programs in Multnomah and Washington counties. Career Coaches will provide workforce development services to low-income youth who face barriers to employment. PDX Youth@Work/SummerWorks are essential programs that provide youth with paid work experiences (internships) and typically operate from October through May and June through September. As a team member, you will work with existing staff to assist in on-boarding youth into the program, work closely with Worksite Liaisons for worksite placement and troubleshooting/monitoring, engage in one-on-one coaching with assigned youth, deliver work readiness training, administer support services, and conduct intern exit-interviews.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and verification of current auto- insurance and have full use of automobile during work hours
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with youth
  • Must be able to pass criminal history background check
  • A combination of any of the following:
  • Knowledge and/or experience in job development and placement activities
  • Knowledge and/or experience of vocational and/or placement counseling for youth
  • Knowledge of the local job market and concerns of employers
  • Knowledge and/or experience with teaching or group facilitation

Responsibilities

  • Conducting youth orientations and collecting/managing essential forms and paperwork
  • Building relationships with assigned youth and potentially the partner agencies affiliated with the youth assigned
  • Working closely with Worksite Liaisons to place youth, address concerns, and offer support to ensure a successful experience for all
  • Offering support services including clothing and transportation necessary for position requirements and to support successful job completions
  • Leading work readiness workshops to help youth with the ‘soft skills’ necessary to succeed in their work experience
  • Maintaining close communication with Service Coordination (NextGen) contractors (as appropriate) or other partner agencies to ensure support needs are met and problems resolved that would be barriers to successful program participation and completion
  • Tracking and reporting data as required in the program design
  • Completing data-entry and maintaining files for each youth on your caseload
  • Regularly reporting to Project Coordinator and attending weekly program meetings
  • Maintaining active engagement and participation with 50-80 youth at one time
  • Ability to conduct occasional driving/travel all over Portland Metro area when necessary to meet participants at sites away from IRCO and/or to deliver support services to participants
  • Function in a positive manner in a demanding work environment
  • Demonstrate a high degree of flexibility to respond to priorities and schedules that may change rapidly
  • Meet multiple, sometimes conflicting deadlines and commitments
  • Utilize a personal computer, read, and analyze data
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with people of multi-background communities, various income and opportunity status, and community focused alignments
  • Treat all youth and supervisors in a respectful and equitable manner and be willing and able to advocate for program participants if necessary
  • Work with distressed or concerned youth, parents, and others in an effective manner
  • Organize files and records systematically and maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Listen for understanding and foster a problem-solving approach to addressing challenges
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of personality types and people from a wide variety of professional backgrounds both inside and outside of IRCO
  • Work flexible hours to meet the needs of youth and maintain a professional level of punctuality
  • Engage fully in recommended professional development, as well as other assigned or required training activities. This engagement can also include participation in optional activities that embrace IRCO’s mission, vision, and values-based initiatives.
