Overview The Career Services Department (CS) provides career development support for a diverse population within New York City, including job seekers, re-entry populations, students, career changers, veterans, and 55+ adults, to achieve their career goals. The Career Services Department offers free one-on-one coaching and workshops that focus on the different aspects of job search and career development. Career Services has two offices, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) and the Bronx Library Center (BLC). The Career Coach is expected to be available virtually and/or in-person, depending on the task, and will coordinate with internal departments to produce a range of NYPL/Career Services events. We are looking for someone we can count on to: Own: Supporting patrons with reviewing and/or writing/editing a resume and cover letter documents, page formatting and reviewing spelling and grammar Facilitation and development of workshops and training programs to assist library patrons build skills related to job search The number of appointments scheduled and meet the target goals set by the department Teach: Patrons the basics of career searching, resume writing, and other job support topics, as well as provide support with identifying and achieving career goals and creating an individualized career plan Branch staff throughout the organization about Career Services basics Learn: How to effectively respond to and predict career support and workforce development needs of NYPL patrons by engaging with external partners. To identify and execute Career Services strategic priorities, adapt to changing work environments, and engage in lifelong learning. Improve: The variety of programming that the Career Services office provides through working with the Career Services manager and team to propose and facilitate programs that are impactful and effective for the Library’s patrons. The partnership connections between the Library’s Career Services team and key stakeholders throughout the New York City workforce development landscape Patron’s digital literacy as they apply for employment, unemployment or job/education training opportunities. Some expectations for this role are that within: 1 month, this person will: Become familiar with and understand the objective and goals of the department, as well as processes and policies Attend Career Services professional development training on writing resume, cover letter, and matching resume to job applications, Brainfuse JobNow, etc. 3 months, this person will: Accept one-on-one job support appointments, supporting patrons with resume writing, cover letters, job applications, use of BrainfuseJobNow, etc. Proficiently use appointment system to schedule, edit, change appointments Provides assistance throughout the library system; makes appropriate referrals internally and externally 6 months and beyond, this person will: Proficiently use appointment system to schedule, edit, change appointments Accept career coaching appointments, supporting patrons with mock interviews, resume review, job search strategies Refer patrons to library resources and job related information, and be able to train patrons on the use of library databases to assist with aptitude tests for determining patrons’ interests and talents Review, assess, route, answer and monitor follow up action steps on correspondence Recognize weaknesses and develop plans to aid in career growth
