GENERAL FUNCTION: The person in this position provides direct services in collaboration with the Memphis Fire Department and Memphis Police Department to individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis in the community or their home environment, participates in the delivery of crisis services to those individuals, and performs other duties as assigned by Leads.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Human Services related field with a valid LPC-MHSP or LCSW License in the State of Tennessee.
  • Experience working in a mental health setting. Ability to work effectively in a crisis service delivery setting dealing with individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Ability to use mature judgment in problem resolution and to formulate appropriate crisis intervention strategies for Center clients.
  • The person must be able to demonstrate self-motivation, and excellent communication skills, and ability to work well with others.
  • The person must be a good listener, possess the ability to be supportive, and be able to help others to achieve a feeling of well-being.
  • All Crisis Specialists must be cross trained for Mobile Crisis. This person must contribute to a professional, healing, and restorative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work well in a team with Memphis Paramedics, Memphis Crisis Intervention Officers (CIT), and other community partners and clinical staff to determine appropriate response while responding to calls in the community. The CARE Team Assessor does not only respond to traditional crisis calls, rather they serve as the mental health professional on the scene and provide de-escalation, psychoeducation, therapeutic intervention and referrals as needed.
  • Conducts telephone crisis assessment of callers when other in person options are not available.
  • Arranges for admission to inpatient facilities, CSU, Crisis Respite, residential treatment facilities, etc. Completes required pre-certifications with the individual’s insurance company for these admissions.
  • Records caller and response information in the Center’s database, ensuring accurate information is entered.
  • Must be trained and certified as a Mandatory Prescreening Agent to complete a Certificate of Need for involuntary inpatient admissions. The need for a CON may be assigned for own clients or other clients seen by non-licensed Specialists.
  • Enter all CONs completed into the State MPA database.
  • Participate in all required trainings.
  • Read work email every business day.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures as outlined in the Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Other duties as assigned.
