About The Position

Counselors in Academic Residence Program (CARE), is a unique program of the Counseling and Mental Health Center that embeds licensed mental health providers within all colleges and schools to provide mental health services for undergraduate and graduate/professional students. This position may provide mental health services on location in the School of Civic Leadership and the iSchool at UT Austin. CARE Coordinators provide the following: Clinical Work Clinical Collaboration Campus Relationship Outreach / Prevention Services Administrative Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Professional Counselor: Licensed to practice independently as a professional counselor in Texas Or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain license to practice independently in Texas within one year
  • Clinical Social Work: Licensed to practice independently as a Clinical Social Worker in Texas Or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain license to practice independently in Texas within one year
  • Psychology: Licensed to practice independently as a Psychologist in Texas Or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain license to practice independently in Texas within one year
  • Professional Counseling: Master's Degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work or other degree which meets eligibility requirement in Texas for licensure; and licensed as a Professional Counselor or the equivalent from another state; must be able to obtain licensure in Texas within one year if licensed in another state. LPCi will not be considered. Two years post masters clinical experience in college or university counseling center or other relevant clinical setting.

  • Psychology: Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology or other degree acceptable to the Texas Board of Examiners of Psychology. Licensed as a Psychologist or the equivalent from another state; must be able to obtain licensure in Texas within one year if licensed in another state. One year, full-time equivalent, post-doctoral clinical experience in college or university counseling center or other relevant clinical setting.
  • Experience in high demand outpatient or inpatient mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing brief individual therapy, crisis intervention, group therapy, care coordination, and case management.
  • Experience providing culturally competent treatment to a varied client population.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and experience in working with serious mental illness.
  • At least 3 years of significant experience in providing short-term individual counseling and crisis intervention services to a culturally varied population.
  • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience in high demand outpatient or inpatient mental health settings.
  • At least 3 years of experience providing crisis intervention, triage, care coordination, and brief therapy to young adults and/or college students.
  • Experience working in a college/university counseling center or community-based mental health setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and other student services providers or ability to work effectively with non-mental health professional colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a large system, and to participate and collaborate effectively in a large mental health services agency.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a flexible yet highly organized working style.
  • Licensed as an LPC/LCSW/Psychologist for a minimum of two years.

Responsibilities

  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management, to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled partnering campus unit or as scheduled by CMHC.
  • Conduct initial assessments of students' presenting concerns. Conduct short-term counseling with students referred for service.
  • Group work may be included in clinical services. If group work is selected, propose/develop new groups to meet the identified needs of students. Follow CMHC policies and procedures in group formation and documentation.
  • Provides programming, including outreach, groups or workshops, to partnering campus unit based on the unique needs of students within that unit.
  • Builds a strong working relationship to meet the needs of assigned partnering campus unit.
  • Develops strong working relationships with staff and faculty in partnering campus unit, responding to requests for support consultation as needed.
  • Provides consultation to staff and faculty about students of concern and information about resources within partnering campus unit on as-needed basis.
  • Provides support to campus partner in the event of a community traumatic event.
  • Attends and participates in small team, departmental, and division meetings
  • Attends staff development programs as assigned.
  • Collaborates with other CARE and CMHC team members regarding clinical work, outreach programming, training, and program development.
  • Coordinates referrals between CMHC and university or community service providers.
  • Reviews client record to determine the progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services offered.
  • Maintains current, accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal law, professional ethics, and Counseling and Mental Health Center, CMHC, policies.
  • May provide clinical training and supervision to social work and psychology interns, as well as pre-doctoral psychology practicum students.
  • Provides individual supervision of interns, practicum students, or psychiatric residents.
  • Provides individual supervision of group co-leaders.
  • Supervises interns' supervision of practicum students.
  • Co-leads training seminars.
  • Offers and supervises preceptorships and apprenticeships for interns.
  • Participates on training-related committees.
  • Participates in training activities during the orientation period.
  • Timely signature on clinical documentation and communication with supervisor of relevant issues.
  • May be assigned other relevant duties as applicable
