About The Position

The Cardiovascular Pharmacy Fellow is appointed through the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Pharmacy and practices under WVU Medicine policies at the Heart Vascular Institute. The primary goal of this fellowship is to educate a "scientific clinician" capable of independent clinical research, advancement of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, and the implementation of impactful cardiology pharmacy practice initiatives. The fellow will bridge the gap between clinical excellence and academic inquiry, contributing to the missions of both the School and the Health System while preparing for a career in advanced clinical/academic practice.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Registered pharmacist with appropriate experience.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in West Virginia.
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency (or equivalent experience) for the 2-year fellowship track, OR completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency (or equivalent experience) for the 1-year accelerated track.
  • Demonstrated potential to become a scientific clinician and an enthusiasm for clinical research and cardiology practice.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research activities organized into four primary pillars: Anticoagulation/Antiplatelet Outcome Research, Heart Failure Pharmacotherapy Optimization Research, Innovative Pharmacy Practice Development and Implementation (Rural Focus), and Multi-center Collaborative Real-world Evidence Research.
  • Initiate research methods and project initiation in Year 1 (for 24-month track).
  • Focus on independent execution, lead-authored publications, and statewide implementation in Year 2 (for 24-month track).
  • Publish systematic reviews/meta-analyses as longitudinal projects during Year 1.
  • Provide clinical service for Heart Failure (HF) Ambulatory Care.
  • Serve as the main contact person for one of the outreach heart failure clinics.
  • Provide Heart Failure Ambulatory Care via weekly coverage (8 hours/week) at the HF outreach clinic.
  • Manage guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) optimization through the HF pharmacy consults for patients seen by the HF outreach clinic.
  • Manage the pharmacist-led intravenous iron consults (2–4 hours per week).
  • Contribute to the academic mission of the WVU School of Pharmacy through didactic and experiential instruction.
  • Support the Cardiology Elective and Cardiology System Based Teaching courses by delivering lectures, developing cases, and conducting assessments.
  • Co-precept APPE students and PGY1 pharmacy residents where activities align with clinic or research areas.
  • Complete a clinical research certificate program through WV CTSI or American.
