About The Position

Post-doctoral fellow position available to study role of modulators of T-type (low-voltage-activated) calcium channels in native tissue preparations and in recombinant cells. Our research involves biophysical techniques to measure membrane currents (whole-cell voltage-clamp and current-clamp recordings) from the human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells, dorsal root ganglion neurons and dorsal horn neurons in wild-type rats and mice, as well as mice lacking subtypes of T-type calcium channels.

Requirements

  • Education: MD or PhD in the field of pharmacology, physiology, molecular biology and/or neuroscience
  • Excellent communication skills using the English language.
  • The ability to work independently within the research lab on assigned projects
  • Computer software, equipment operation, or research technical skills

Nice To Haves

  • Background in physiology and anesthesiology
  • Experience with slice physiology and patch clamp recordings is desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surgery on rats and mice.
  • Perform recordings of spontaneous synaptic currents in acute spinal cord slice preparation.
  • Perform recordings of optogenetically evoked synaptic currents in acute spinal cord slice preparation.
  • Perform recordings of calcium currents in acute slice preparation, dorsal root ganglion neurons and HEK cells.
  • Perform recordings of action potentials in acute spinal cord slice preparation.
  • Perform pharmacological experiments in acute spinal cord slice preparation.
  • Analyze the data.
  • Write scientific manuscripts.
  • Other post-doc, students and instructors in the lab are not trained to work on spinal cord slice preparation and dorsal root ganglion neurons. Additionally, they are fully engaged in performing experiments and duties required for other extramurally funded projects.
