Cardiac Sonographers use sophisticated diagnostic ultrasound equipment to produce dynamic real-time imaging of the heart's chambers, walls, valves and great vessels to assist the physician in diagnosing cardiovascular disease. Cardiac Sonographers complete important tasks, such as acquiring information related to the heart's anatomy and physiology, evaluating acquired and congenital cardiac abnormalities and associated complications, evaluating narrowed or leaking heart valves, looking for causes of murmurs, chest pain, shortness of breath, tracking and evaluating chronic heart conditions, acquiring images during a stress echocardiogram and assisting with image acquisition in the operating room for valve or device implantation. A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 7:00AM – 3:30PM or 8:00AM – 4:30PM, with on-call requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Sonography, Vascular Technology or Exercise Science OR graduate of a cardiac ultrasound program (18-month program) OR two years of full-time echo experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross
  • New hires must obtain the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or the Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential from Cardiac Credentialing International within one year of hire date
  • Demonstrated knowledge of m-mode, 2D and doppler calculations and cardiac hemodynamics
  • Familiar with computers and ability to learn related program
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to assist with transport of patients, i.e., pushing beds, stretchers and wheelchairs.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic procedures to assess cardiac structures and hemodynamics in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians.
  • Set up and adjust all equipment and manually maneuvers transducers to perform exams.
  • Implement safety standards and perform appropriate quality control procedures.
  • Perform routine and complex studies and assist physicians in a variety of imaging procedures.
  • Recognize significant structures, artifacts, pathology, and equipment limitations.
