Requirements

  • Must meet same basic qualifications as a Corrections Officer.
  • Minimum high school graduate or equivalent; related college courses highly desirable.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting, one of which was in a position requiring supervisory capabilities.
  • Must be representative of worthwhile qualities with which an inmate can identify. Must be emotionally stable and understanding. Must be flexible, cooperative, and empathetic to the total needs of the inmates.
  • Working knowledge of laws relating to corrections.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable court orders.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with a variety of personalities.
  • Ability to interpret complex written/oral communication, documents, and instructions.
  • Ability to make and implement decisions without assistance.
  • Ability to give instructions and have them carried out.
  • Ability to coordinate staffing requirement for security supervisors and officers.
  • Ability to write communication documents, policies, courtroom defenses, contract negotiations, and other required written correspondence.
  • Must have resided within the United States or its territories for the last five (5) years.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.

Responsibilities

  • As Captain, you will act as the shift commander, directing all security and control operations during a shift.
  • This also means overseeing staff and providing maximum facility coordination, inmate supervision and safety as well as preparing records and reports.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures (including emergency procedures) and regulations for custody, security, and treatment of inmates.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with all security, safety, sanitation, contraband, fire, and other facility regulations.
  • Review disciplinary matters concerning both staff and inmates.
  • Coordinate staffing requirements for security supervisors and officers and assess staff effectiveness.
  • Respond to all unusual occurrences.
  • Provide direct line supervision over correctional officers; make assignments, review post orders, and assure that staff is trained in implementation of all procedures.
  • Promote an atmosphere conducive to character development (encourage favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of facilities and influencing relationships among inmates).
  • Facilitate prompt assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, or emotional trauma.
  • Give primary guidance when issues arise; make referrals for more complex problems.
  • Support, clarify and help inmates relate to all facility programs.
  • Write various documents, including policies, courtroom defenses and contract negotiations.
  • Implement facility goals.
  • Monitor daily logs.
