About The Position

The Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS) unifies front-line public safety units across the University for a holistic approach to campus community safety, innovation in approaches, and clarity in leadership responsibility and accountability. Key units include UW Emergency Management, SafeCampus and the UW Police Department Seattle campus. Division staff work daily in partnership with units across and outside the UW system to both create safer, welcoming campus environments; prepare for potential natural or human-made disasters; and respond appropriately to incidents. Safeguarding the academic community with P.R.I.D.E. The University of Washington Police Department (UWPD) has the exclusive responsibility to act upon law-enforcement matters and perform police functions for the Seattle Campus of the University of Washington, 24 hours a day. DCCS has an outstanding opportunity for a Nighttime Campus Security Sergeant . The Nighttime Campus Security Sergeant will play a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness and professionalism of the Security Services Bureau. This position serves as a bridge between management and front-line security personnel, providing valuable operational support, training assistance, and mentorship. The Nighttime Campus Security Sergeant will supervise Security Guards and Campus Safety Responders in day-to-day operations, implementing best practices and fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. As a supervisor, this position will have the authority to hire staff, evaluate job performance, and take corrective action if performance is not acceptable. This role focuses on guiding coaching and supporting team members to ensure the highest standards of campus safety and security. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator, an experienced security professional, and a natural mentor who can positively influence team performance and contribute to overall success of our university’s security operations.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Two years of work experience as a campus police, public safety or security officer, or equivalent
  • No previous felony convictions
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration
  • Must maintain a valid WA state driver’s license at all times.
  • Must be flexible for scheduling.
  • Work shift to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to quickly respond to emergency situations – including some running, biking, and climbing of several flights of stairs.
  • Must maintain physical stamina and preparedness to satisfactorily and expeditiously respond to emergency situations throughout duration of employment.
  • Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications (including use of AED) within six months of hire.
  • Regular climbing: climb stairs as part of patrol duties particularly if an elevator is out of service or to clear a building during an emergency.
  • Frequent reaching out, while driving vehicle, riding bicycle, and locking and unlocking doors.
  • Frequently lift / move 10 lbs., including wearing required equipment belt weighing approximately 6 lbs.
  • May occasionally lift /move up to 25 lbs. when conducting rescue assistance.
  • This position is designated as one that performs an essential function. This means that the position’s incumbent must continue to report to work as directed in the event that the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster, or other emergency condition; must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Lead or supervisor experience in a security setting.
  • Experience in working for security services at a University campus.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills to include being clearly understandable via radio communication transmissions, especially during emergency circumstances, as well as the ability to maintain records clearly and legibly.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Able to work collaboratively and be a positive lead.
  • Training or teaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the daily activities of security guards and security officers.
  • Support the implementation of campus security strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Schedule and prepare coverage planning, including covering shifts when needed.
  • Facilitate training to assigned team of security staff.
  • Guide and mentor new and existing team members.
  • Respond to security incidents and emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist in preparing reports.
  • Ensure staff compliance with university and department policies and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the maintenance of security technologies and equipment.
  • Support various administrative duties including participating in security staff recruitment processes, reviewing and approving timesheets in Workday, scheduling and managing shift assignment in Telestaff, and completing the annual performance evaluation process for all direct reports.
