About The Position

The Camp Nurse oversees all aspects of the health of campers and staff in all areas of camp. The Camp Nurse follows the Standing Medical Orders and American Camp Association (ACA) standards and ensures these are followed throughout camp.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • LPN, RN, or MD required.
  • Certified in CPR/First Aid.
  • Belief in the mission of GSUSA and GSGI.
  • Member of GSUSA or willingness to become so.
  • Interest in caring for children in an outdoor setting.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts camper and staff health checks within 24 hours of their arrival, and collects, reviews, and files health history forms and insurance information.
  • Informs unit staff and kitchen of individual needs of campers as soon as possible on the first day of each session.
  • Distributes medication to campers at appropriate time each day; maintains written record of medication distribution.
  • Communicates with parents as appropriate based camper illness, injury, or concern.
  • Maintains records of all visits to the infirmary for both campers and staff.
  • Enters other First Aid logs into the permanent record periodically; completes and/or files all incident report forms.
  • Maintains contact with the designated physician, registered nurse, and/or local hospital facilities.
  • Reports all cases of illness, injury, or near misses to the Camp Director; gives necessary First Aid and care in accordance with Standing Medical Orders.
  • Provides supervision for ill campers or staff in the health center.
  • Participates in camp activities as time allows.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
