About The Position

Mentor teen leaders, overseeing their development in a camp setting, and ensuring the safety and positive experience for both the trainees and younger campers by facilitating training, planning activities, modeling responsibility, and managing daily camp operations. The role blends counselor duties with leadership training, focusing on guiding participants to build skills in areas like child development, behavior management, teamwork, and personal growth. Assist with day-to-day operations of the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center Camp programs. Directly interact with camper’s parents and guardians. Maintain camp facilities. Promote development of a community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes empathy, continuous improvement, and high performance.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old and have attended or graduated from high school or equivalent.
  • Experience with youth in camp/recreation settings.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Maturity, patience, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to comply with Suffolk County Department of Health requirements.
  • Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives.
  • Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities.
  • Ability to maintain and handle live farm animals for educational and demonstration purposes.
  • Ability to drive tractor. Initial training provided if necessary.
  • Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations.
  • Paid or volunteer experience working with children and/or the public.
  • Have an appreciation and understanding of the natural environment.
  • Candidate must be able to work effectively with a wide range of diverse young people.
  • A positive and energetic attitude.
  • Must be able to work for the full camp season. This includes training before camp and wrap up after camp has ended.
  • Must be able to work one before or after care shift each week.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Associates Degree in Education, Agriculture, Youth Development. High School diploma plus 2 years of related experience may substitute.

Nice To Haves

  • Attendance in or graduation from a recognized college/university or equivalent.
  • Additional education in the areas of general / special education, environmental science, horticulture, animal science, art education, music education, agriculture and/or natural science.
  • Some teaching experience.
  • Ability to assist with teaching and a keen interest in educating youth.
  • Leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Mentorship & Training: Lead training sessions, provide real-time feedback, and coach LITs/CITs in leadership skills, program planning, and camp operations.
  • Camper Supervision: Ensure the well-being, safety, and inclusion of campers, modeling positive behavior, handling hygiene, and managing daily routines.
  • Program Facilitation: Plan and run leadership development activities, team-building exercises, and program area assignments for trainees (LITs/CITs).
  • Role Modeling: Act as a positive example of camp values (respect, responsibility, honesty, caring) and professional conduct.
  • Administrative Duties: Attend staff meetings, cooperate with other staff, and handle duties like camp maintenance and camp-wide activity support.
  • Evaluation: Provide formal evaluations of LIT/CITs to assess their growth and readiness for future camp counselor or other life roles.
