About The Position

The Summer Camp Lead is responsible for facilitating Martis Camp’s Summer Camp programming and providing outstanding leadership, energy, and care for campers. This role oversees a group of up to 12 children with support from Camp Counselors, ensuring a safe 6:1 camper-to-staff ratio. The Summer Camp Lead delivers educational and play-based programming, maintains a joyful and inclusive environment, and serves as the primary point of contact for camp staff, parents, and the Youth Programs Manager. This position requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and a genuine love for working with children.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification (will be provided during training).
  • Previous experience working with children in camps, education, recreation, or childcare.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and support camp teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to manage group behavior using positive guidance and age-appropriate techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm, flexible, and upbeat in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in summer, high altitude conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be available for all Winter Camp dates and trainings.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading summer camps, outdoor recreation programs, or nature-based activities preferred.
  • Experience in behavior management, early childhood education, or elementary education preferred.
  • Familiarity with luxury service standards or experience in high-end hospitality environments preferred.
  • Additional certifications—such as Child Safety Training, Youth Mental Health First Aid, Lifeguard certification, or Wilderness First Aid—are considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily Summer Camp programming, teaching and facilitating crafts, games, outdoor activities, science projects, and seasonal curriculum developed by the Youth Programs Manager.
  • Maintain responsibility for the physical and emotional well-being of all campers, ensuring a safe, supportive, and engaging environment.
  • Adapt activities and instruction for various ages, learning styles, and abilities within the group.
  • Create a fun, energetic, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages creativity, curiosity, connection, and winter adventure.
  • Act as the lead supervisor for a group of up to 12 children, ensuring all counselors maintain active supervision and safety practices.
  • Manage group transitions, mealtimes, outdoor play, and all movement between camp locations—ensuring every child is accounted for at all times.
  • Handle routine childcare needs calmly and appropriately, including behavior support, emotional regulation, accidents, spills, and smmer-weather considerations.
  • Uphold all Martis Camp youth safety policies, boundaries, and emergency procedures.
  • Provide direction, delegation, and ongoing support to Camp Counselors throughout the day.
  • Assign counselor tasks (setup, cleanup, activity stations, transitions, etc.) to ensure smooth operations.
  • Serve as the on-site liaison between Camp Counselors and the Youth Programs Manager, relaying updates, concerns, supply needs, and incident reports.
  • Model professionalism, teamwork, and clear communication for the camp team.
  • Greet families during camp check-in and checkout, providing warm, helpful, and professional interactions.
  • Communicate daily highlights, behavior concerns, and general updates to parents and guardians as needed.
  • Ensure that every child is dismissed only to authorized individuals, following all camp safety protocols.
  • Represent Martis Camp’s hospitality standards with warmth, clarity, and discretion.
  • Ensure all materials, supplies, and activities are prepared ahead of each day’s programming.
  • Assist with snack and lunch and monitor mealtimes to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Help maintain organized, clean, and safe camp areas—including educational spaces, play spaces, and outdoor environments.
  • Support outside instructors or vendors assisting with special summer programming.
  • Complete attendance tracking, incident documentation, and behavior reports as directed.
  • Support general Family Barn operations as needed during camp hours.
  • Work collaboratively with the Youth Programs Manager, Family Barn team, Counselors, and other Ambassadors to ensure consistent and high-quality service.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and seasonal orientations.
  • Help maintain a positive, professional, and team-centered work culture.
  • Support Recreation, Folk School, and other Family Barn departments as needed.
  • Uphold Martis Camp’s values of excellence, integrity, and genuine hospitality in all work.
