About The Position

The Lifeguard is primarily responsible for the overall safety and well-being of all campers, staff and volunteers as it relates to water activities including swimming, boating and fishing. This position will also aid in the education and training of water safety skills to encourage life-long love of water-based recreation. This position will also serve as camp mentor in non water activities.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred; preference will be given to students enrolled in a therapy or special education degree.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification and current full Lifeguard certification preferred; paid training will be provided to the right candidate that is not yet certified.
  • CPR and First Aid certified preferred; current/updated training will be provided.
  • Ability to swim 500 yards in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Must have the ability to work respectfully and courteously with a wide variety of individuals, including individuals with disabilities.
  • Prior experience in a camp, educational or recreational setting required.
  • Must possess training or prior experience in behavior management and conflict resolution.
  • Central Registry Clearance mandatory; clearance check will be performed by Pioneer Resources
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work-site in personal vehicle or be able to arrive to 1145 Wesley Ave to travel with group on bus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of all campers, staff and volunteers during all waterfront activities including, but not limited to, swimming, boating and fishing.
  • Teach water safety skills to campers to encourage a life-long love of water-based recreation.
  • Train and educate camp staff to observe campers participating in water activities in order to provide quick and efficient assistance to anyone showing signs of distress; be well addressed in lost swimmer protocols and provide regular drills to staff.
  • Lead all program activities such as waterfront activities, challenge course, arts and crafts, as well as educational and recreational programs.
  • Oversee camp policy enforcement as it relates to waterfront activities and general water safety.
  • Operate and maintain all safety, emergency and waterfront equipment.
  • Provide emergency CPR or other life-saving intervention as required.
  • Present any ideas or concerns as they relate to overall water safety, to the Director of Camp Services and/or Day Camp Coordinator.
  • Assist various managers/co-workers in attending to emergencies/incidents in accordance with camp policies.
  • Abide by all Camp Licensing policies and procedures as noted in Camp Handbook and Policies 2026 including: I. Behavior management plan [R400.11113] ii. Child protection plan [R 400.11115] iii. Health services policy [R 400.11119] iv. Nutrition and food service plan [R 400.11131] v. Program and emergency transportation policies [R 400.11143 vi. Response for potential emergencies and disasters [R 400.11149] vii. High Adventure Activities [R 400.11401] viii. Aquatics [R 400.11411)].
  • During down-times, may be required to assist with other camp duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Camp Services.
