The Day Camp Driver/ Mentor is primarily responsible for providing transportation to and from camp for campers. While at camp they will be guiding and directing the daily activities of assigned campers. This position supervises and assists assigned children and young adults who have disabilities with a wide range of activities including swimming, boating, outdoor sports, outdoor and indoor games, as well as arts and crafts.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement and maintain a good driving record with less than six (6) points
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred; preference will be given to students enrolled in a therapy or special education degree.
  • CPR and First Aid certified a plus; current/updated training will be provided.
  • Proven record of strong verbal communication skills, the ability to remain well organized, as well as the ability to problem solve in a timely and effective manner, preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work respectfully and courteously with a wide variety of individuals, including individuals with disabilities.
  • This employee must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and DOT physical examination. If the background check reveals disqualifying information, employment shall be terminated unless the disqualifying information was successfully appealed as inaccurate, expunged or set aside.
  • Central Registry Clearance mandatory; clearance check will be performed by Pioneer Resources.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a camp, educational or recreational setting preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe operation of the vehicle and observe all driving and safety laws of the State of Michigan.
  • Ensure that all transportation users requiring assistance in boarding and leaving the bus receive such assistance.
  • Maintain order on the vehicle and report incidents of maladaptive behavior on the incident form provided by Pioneer.
  • Ensure that vehicles are returned to their designated storage area at the end of each day and that the vehicles are properly secured.
  • Check the overall condition of the vehicle on a daily basis, this includes oil, fuel, transmission, water, etc., and replenish as necessary, according to the Pre‐Trip Inspection located on the tablet or paper form provided and report any defects or issues to the Supervisor or Fleet Manager by way of a work order.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for campers and peers.
  • Lead all program activities such as waterfront activities, challenge course, arts and crafts, as well as educational and recreational programs.
  • Assist campers with tasks associated with daily living (such as toileting, dressing and/or personal care) while maintaining and protecting the dignity of all campers.
  • Aid in conflict resolution in an appropriate and professional manner in accordance with Pioneer Resources’ policies that promotes cooperative behavior towards others.
  • Assist with serving day camp lunches.
  • Assist with the loading/unloading of buses and other vehicles as campers arrive and leave.
  • Ability to articulately complete incident and other written reports to assure coordination of services for campers.
  • Communicate any unusual incidents, illnesses, or injuries of campers to the Day Camp Coordination in a timely manner.
  • Assist various managers/co-workers in attending to emergencies/incidents in accordance with camp policies.
  • During down-times, may be required to assist with other camp duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Camp Services.
  • Camp Counselors will remain on-site for the duration of an assigned camping session until campers are signed out to the approved designated custodial adult.
