About The Position

The Camp Director is primarily responsible for providing support to campers with Type 1 diabetes in an indoor and outdoor environment during the summer and school vacation months in addition to supervision of the counselors, nurses, and staff members who work directly with the campers. The Jack Rua Camp for Children with Diabetes (Camp Jack) is a medical summer camp program that aims to provide youth with a safe, active, and fun experience in a structured day camp environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three to five years experience working with youth
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Understanding of workforce development and job readiness training
  • A minimum of three years experience in program management is preferred.
  • Skills in organization and oral and written communication
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate programs and develop corrective action to resolve issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and web-based platforms
  • Ability to provide current copy of all required professional licenses, CPR, first aid and health records
  • Ability to interact appropriately with youth
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, active, outdoor environment while on your feet for the majority of the day
  • Must have means to travel to all required work-related events
  • Ability to provide a current copy of all required health records
  • A qualifying criminal background check and a valid government-issued ID

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and past work experience in a camp setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Department of Public Health requirements related to summer camps is preferred.
  • Knowledge of non-profit agencies is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, organizational, and fiscal skills are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of program enrollment and marketing to ensure full capacity
  • Conduct training sessions for new and returning staff members on the treatment and care of Type 1 diabetes with specific focus on working with T1D youth
  • Coordinate and oversee all planning and operating functions of summer camp in accordance with standards of all accrediting entities and camp-specific regulations, including, but not limited to, recruitment, hiring, supervision, training, evaluation, supplies and equipment, safety, crisis prevention management, and record-keeping and reporting
  • Collaborate closely with the Camp Jack Program Operations Consultant and the Vice President of the Childrens Services Division on all aspects of camp
  • Create and maintain community and school partnerships and relationships to provide education on the camp program
  • Secure and retain Camp Directorship through the American Camp Association
  • Ensure all camp regulations are obtained and maintained
  • Recruit, register, and support all campers
  • Procure funds for scholarships (camperships) to support campers
  • Maintain and review records of all camp operations, staff, and facilities on ongoing basis
  • Communicate regularly with families about campers behaviors, daily activities, diabetes management, and general health care
  • Maintain program safety requirements
  • Manage staffing, including counselor call-outs and disciplinary action as necessary
  • Work with camp Medical Director to the support nursing team with daily challenges and all daily communication with families.
  • Plan theme weeks for the summer camp season and the daily activities for the campers that align with each theme
  • Communicate staffing and activity schedules and daily expectations to the counselors
  • Develop a positive relationship with Camp Welch leadership to help ensure amiable and productive interactions to navigate camp-wide concerns as a team
  • Develop a bus schedule for campers who use daily transportation and ensure staff coverage for the bus transportation
  • Plan, implement, and oversee trips and special activities both pre-camp and during the camp season
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring counselors and nurses for the camp season and ensure all staff members trainings and medical records are up to date
  • Plan and participate in family engagement activities to create and foster positive relationships with the campers and their families
  • Search for and oversee the purchase of snacks that are appropriate for children with Type 1 diabetes; then carefully develop nutritional snack plans and communicate with families about the snack and lunch menu options
  • Plan and facilitate regular staff meetings
  • Assist in writing grant proposals and necessary grant reporting requirements for all funding sources of Camp Jack and the Diabetes Association, Inc.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of databases and all pertinent case files for program operations for Camp Jack and the Diabetes Association, Inc.
  • Maintain communication with the Director of Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator for Camp Jack program newsletters and social media platforms
  • Order all supplies and equipment as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and division vice president
  • Participate in all staff meetings and required training sessions, including in-service training, as scheduled
  • Maintain all program and Agency required trainings
