JOB IDENTIFICATION Job Title: Camp Counselor Grade: II FLSA: Non-Exempt Department: Recreation SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS Reports to: Camp Director Supervises: n/a BASIC FUNCTION Serve as primary caregiver responsible for safety and care of campers at all times. Counselors will implement the programing, physical/recreational activities including, field trips and swimming set by the Director and Assistant Director. Counselors will report directly to the Camp Director. Staff should be flexible to work both mornings and evening shifts. Working schedule is Monday-Friday, with 6 hour shifts between the hours of between 6:30 am-6:30 pm. The Des Plaines Park District Camp runs for an 8 week period, shift may change at the discretion of the Recreation Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Education: Completion of some High School or higher education
  • Experience: Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Individual employed for this position must be able to effectively communicate with campers and staff.
  • Must be able to physically accompany campers, interact with campers, deal with improper behavior and address emergency situations.
  • Must have valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Certifications: CPR and First Aid Certification, Classes available through Park District
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License

  • Previous camp experience desired.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Assistant and Camp Directors.
  • Attend all preseason training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Adhere to Des Plaines Park District policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Responsible for the safety, education, and recreational programming for the participants.
  • Creating and implementing program activities daily and have them approved by the Director.
  • Must supervise campers closely during all activities and at all times.
  • Supervise camper swim time in assigned zone set by Directors.
  • Attend and supervise campers on field trips and outings.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member with all other staff members.
  • Take proper care of all camp equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with the start and end of day cleanup.
  • Submit routine paperwork such as Accident/Incident Reports, Time-Off Request Forms.
  • Supervise and lead group activity sessions and program areas as assigned.
  • Organize and instruct activities while maintaining control of the program and its participants.
  • Enforce camp rules.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Director and Assistant Director.
  • Any other related duties.
