About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp operating at YMCA Camp West Mar. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age. Exceptions may be made for 16 or 17 year olds that have successfully completed the Counselor in Training (CIT) program.
  • Experience interacting with children and thoroughly enjoy working with youth.
  • Must possess and exhibit skills and experience in a wide range of program and camp activities.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings, including but not limited to: attendance at YMCA All Camp Staff Training Day, staying at Camp West Mar for Training Week occurring the week prior to the season’s start, First Aid training, etc…
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents.
  • Ability to address issues in a verbal and/or written format.
  • Exceptional skills in comprehending oral and written communications to complete assigned tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a group of children.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Sets an exemplary example for campers in leadership, moral judgments, respect for personal property, equipment, and facilities.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Set-up and teardown of equipment for games, crafts, meals, or anything else assigned.
  • Maintain knowledge and location of first aid and biohazard kits.
  • Inform supervisor of any problems or major issues.
  • Help maintain on file all paperwork necessary to comply with State & County Health Department regulations (these items will be provided).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
