About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Camp Lead, the Camp Counselor is responsible for ensuring the safety of each camper, interacting with campers on a regular basis and enthusiastically implementing the summer camp agenda. He/she must be conscientious of his or her position as not only a counselor, but also as a good role model. The person must also be aware that they are the key element of the child’s enjoyment of the program.

Requirements

  • Certifications: Adult/Child CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certification
  • At least 18 years of age. Exceptions may be made for 16 or 17 year olds that have successfully completed the Counselor In Training (CIT) program
  • Experience working with youth
  • He/she must have the ability to demonstrate understanding of program development and group management; effective and efficient time management; demonstrate capacity for managing and leading youth; excellent oral and written communication skills; interpersonal and coaching skills, ability to exemplify; and a “Y-Voice” that demonstrates determination, genuine concern, welcoming attitude, hopefulness and a nurturing spirit.
  • Understand ethical behavior and business practices, and ensure that own behavior and the behavior of others is consistent with these standards and aligns with the values of the organization; maintain a work ethic that holds a high standard to organizational accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Camp Lead with implementing program activities (example: crafts, recreation, nature activities, and pool time).
  • Assist with the set-up and teardown of any necessary equipment or materials for games, crafts, or anything else the Camp Lead may assign.
  • Attend staff meetings as deemed necessary.
  • Enthusiastically implement each week’s activity agenda.
  • Implement character development lessons on a regular basis, as well as remind children of these important traits through daily incentives.
  • Set a good example for campers in leadership, moral judgments, respect for personal property, equipment and facilities.
  • Compile a list of recommendations for the future at the end of the summer.
  • Wear staff shirt every day and ensure other staff members are wearing staff shirts.
  • Attend the pre-camp training sessions.
  • Maintain Adult & child CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Help to keep the camp and YMCA clean, safe, and in good repair.
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures and location of first aid and biohazard kits.
  • Make the Camp Lead aware of any problems related to campers.
  • Help implement a fire drill each week for safety and document it.
  • Help maintain on file all paperwork necessary to comply with State & County Health Department regulations (these items will be provided by the YMCA before camp starts).
  • Other duties as assigned.
