About The Position

Camp Achieve is a day camp for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 6 and 12 that provides innovative programming and therapeutic recreational activities to improve the social, behavioral, and academic skills of autistic students. Camp Achieve Camp Counselors will attend, plan, execute, and engage in daily camp activities for autistic children ages 6-12 in a 6-week summer day camp. Additionally, this position will ensure the direct supervision of campers.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
  • Be able to stand/walk/kneel for long periods of time.
  • Possess strong judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Possess the ability to make independent decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possess the ability to problem solve in a proactive manner and make decisions around participant safety and well-being.
  • Possess the ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Possess the ability to relate/work well to children with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
  • Be willing to participate in staff development activities, as assigned.
  • Have the ability to obtain university-approved First Aid/CPR certification, when assigned.
  • Have the ability to earn certification in Professional Crisis Management (Training provided during first week of training.).
  • Have the ability to assist campers in the pool (i.e., must be comfortable in the shallow end of a pool).
  • Have the ability to assist campers with physical care (including, but not limited to toileting, dressing, and eating).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with young children with and without disabilities.
  • Experience writing lesson plans and teaching or tutoring children academic and social emotional skills.
  • Experience teaching children to swim.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with camp staff in the daily care and supervision of campers.
  • Learn and implement all behavior support plans.
  • Facilitate punctual and safe transitions throughout the camp day.
  • Provide direct supervision to campers ensuring camper/staff safety and engagement in camp activities.
  • Develop rapport with campers and their families and assist in group activities as needed.
  • Monitor curriculum education, physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children with Autism spectrum disorders.
  • Participate in trainings.
  • Serve as a role model to all campers and staff with professionalism and positive attitude.
  • Assist campers with activities of daily living (ADL). ADL’s include, but are not limited to: dressing, toileting, and eating.
  • Assist in writing progress reports for campers.
  • Participate in parent conferences at the end of camp.
  • Assist in group activities.
  • Supervise activities to enhance the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Assist campers in the pool daily (i.e., must be comfortable in the shallow end of a pool).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
