About The Position

Provides emergency lifesaving assistance to swimmers; performs lifesaving C.P.R. and first aid in accordance with certified practices and procedures; contacts emergency medical assistance when needed; stays with victims until emergency medical assistance takes over care of the victim. Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards. Assist in maintaining swimming pool and lakefront programs. Ensures the camp staff and campers are aware of and adhere to safety and educational procedures in boating by assisting in the implementation of staff training for boating, training other staff on their boating responsibilities, and ensuring that campers and staff follow safety procedures for boating. Provides constant surveillance of pool and waterfront activities to help prevent and manage injuries. Directs and supervises the behavior of all swimmers to ensure compliance with pool safety rules. Evaluate the aquatic abilities of campers and staff. Teaches swim classes as assigned. Monitors opening day swim tryouts, free swim, water carnivals, and night swims. Maintains awareness of weather changes and responds appropriately, in cooperation with established camp guidelines for waterfront evacuation, and guides campers in a calm and orderly manner. Assists with the movement of swimmers and conducts rainy day activities with campers. No personal swimming when the campers' swim period is in session. Mains the cleanliness of the pool water; vacuums the bottom of the pool surface; scrubs the side walls; backwashes the filter system; checks the filter gauges and regulates the water level and temperature of the pool. Cleans restrooms, deck, baby pool, and grounds. Monitors and controls the chemical levels of pool water to ensure proper levels are maintained at all times. Provides pool records accurately and completely. Mains the neatness and cleanliness of the waterfront area, collecting and disposing of trash. Daily inspection and cleaning of paddle boats, pontoon boats, dock areas, and life jackets. Makes sure that all boating equipment is secured and locked before personnel leave the lake area. Monitors waterfront activities, including swimming, boating, canoeing, and other similar activities. Everyone must leave the waterfront/pool area before leaving the area. Prepares and maintains weekly reports of aquatic program and attendance. Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. Sits with camper tables during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed. Mains personal living quarters in a neat, clean, and ready condition for inspection. Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Aquatics/Lakefront Supervisor and Camp Director.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of life-saving techniques.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development.
  • Knowledge of proper pool management.
  • Knowledge and prior use of a power boat used for water rescue.
  • Knowledge of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, culture, and protocol.
  • Ability to embrace, support, and promote The Salvation Army’s mission and ministry.
  • Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a professional manner.
  • Ability to supervise swimmers and provide constant surveillance of pool activities to ensure swimmer safety and to respond to emergency rescue when needed.
  • Ability to perform life-saving techniques, C.P.R., and first aid procedures in emergencies.
  • Ability to enforce all pool rules.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.
  • Ability to test and adjust pool water to ensure the proper chemical balance as well as the safety of the swimmers.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain up-to-date pool records.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Certification as a Lifeguard by a nationally recognized certifying body, Life Saving Certification.
  • C.P.R. and First Aid Certification.
  • If operating a motorized watercraft, have a Valid State Driver’s License and have completed a boat safety course.

  • One year of experience working as a lifeguard is preferred.
