About The Position

EMH&T is currently seeking a Civil Engineering CAD Technician to join our Public Works team located in Columbus, OH. Our CAD Technician works collaboratively with the engineering team to draft technical engineering design components, assist with preliminary and completed layouts, design concepts, and detailed design drawings from technical notes, sketches, and/or other drawings. The Public Works team supports public municipality work, sewer and waterline design, park design, roadway and utility design, economic planning, pacing projects and more.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to express ideas clearly.
  • Some technical education, specialized training or work experience with one or more CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, Microstation, ARC/INFO, GIS.
  • Knowledge of basic math (geometry) involved in the production and use of drawings or models.
  • Experience with drafting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation).
  • Prepare plans, profiles, cross‑sections, and construction details for civil infrastructure projects such as roads, utilities, grading, stormwater systems, and site development.
  • Update and revise drawings based on engineer markups, design changes, and project requirements.
  • Maintain drawing accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company and industry drafting standards.
  • May assist with preparing permit submittal packages, construction documents, and as‑built drawings.
  • Ensure proper version control and documentation of revisions.
  • Incorporate survey data, GIS information, and field notes into design files.
  • Perform self‑checks and peer reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
  • Identify potential design conflicts or constructability issues and communicate them to the engineering team. This may include performing occasional field visits to reconcile prepared plan data with existing site conditions.
  • Utilize civil engineering design tools such as Civil 3D corridors, surfaces, grading tools, and pipe networks.
  • Stay current with software updates, drafting best practices, and emerging technologies.
  • Prepare exhibits for conceptual layouts, engineering reports, project discussions, and client meetings.
