Overview The Buyer is responsible for managing the end‑to‑end purchasing lifecycle to ensure material availability in support of production while balancing service level, cost, inventory, and working capital objectives. This role analyzes demand and inventory signals, places and manages purchase orders, and maintains strong supplier partnerships to achieve high levels of on‑time delivery, quality, and reliability. The Buyer operates in a fast‑paced, lean manufacturing environment and works cross‑functionally with Planning, Operations, Engineering, Quality, and Finance to proactively resolve supply challenges, mitigate risk, and support sourcing of custom, precision, and long-lead materials.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent related experience required; Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Typically 4–6+ years of progressive experience in buying, procurement, or supply chain within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting production‑driven environments with changing priorities.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems such as JDE, SAP, Oracle, or similar.
  • Strong working knowledge of purchasing, materials management, and supplier coordination practices.
  • Ability to analyze inventory, demand, and supply data to make sound purchasing decisions.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across functions and with external suppliers.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and execute with a high level of follow‑through.
  • Ability to independently resolve routine issues and exercise good judgment within established procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in lean or continuous improvement‑focused organizations preferred.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze on‑hand inventory, open orders, lead times, and projected usage to determine what, how much, and when to purchase.
  • Create, maintain, and manage purchase orders in the ERP system to support production schedules and inventory targets.
  • Balance material availability, customer service requirements, and working capital objectives when making purchasing decisions.
  • Monitor open order quantities and due dates and adjust purchasing actions as business needs change.
  • Maintain regular communication with suppliers to confirm pricing, lead times, delivery dates, and capacity commitments.
  • Proactively follow up on orders to ensure on‑time delivery and resolve issues related to delays, shortages, quality, or pricing discrepancies.
  • Monitor supplier performance related to delivery, quality, and responsiveness; develop and execute action plans to address gaps.
  • Negotiate delivery schedules, quantities, and pricing within defined authority; partner with Commodity Managers or Senior Buyers on higher‑value or higher‑risk negotiations as appropriate.
  • Identify and communicate supply risks such as long lead times, capacity constraints, or single‑source dependencies, escalating when production or customer impact is likely.
  • Partner closely with Planning and Operations to align purchasing decisions with production schedules and changing priorities.
  • Support Engineering with sourcing and procurement of custom, precision, and long-lead components.
  • Facilitate supplier quality discussions in coordination with Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing and support resolution and disposition decisions.
  • Work with Finance and Accounts Payable to resolve invoice discrepancies and supplier payment issues as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date data in ERP systems, including item setup, pricing, lead times, and supplier information.
  • Use ERP and reporting tools to support data‑driven purchasing and inventory decisions.
  • Identify inefficiencies in purchasing and supplier processes and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to lean manufacturing and process improvement efforts focused on improving flow, reliability, and waste reduction.
  • Prioritize work based on production impact and changing business conditions.
