About The Position

Completes training rotation through primary functions of the Business Office (Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger Accounting/Reconciliation) to establish a fully-rounded support role across these functions. Completes special projects and assigned tasks to help ensure efficient operations and continuous improvement across the Business Office, including the development, tracking and reporting of critical controls and procedures. Supports completion of internal and external reporting and auditing requirements. Serves as functional back-up to Business Office personnel as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration or equivalent is preferred.
  • Accounting, detailed bookkeeping or other related business experience will be positively considered.
  • Other degreed or non-degreed candidates will be considered on the basis of work experience and/or activities that reflect demonstrated strengths in leadership, teamwork, analytical problem-solving, resourcefulness, ability to work independently, and relationship management skills.
  • The ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment is essential to the employee’s successful job performance .
  • Must have the ability to multitask and manage pressure under frequently tight deadlines with changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency operating personal computers and the use of the internet, databases, and Microsoft/Google software products.
  • Ability to communicate to senior executives and colleagues clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all federal, state, and local regulations pertinent to job responsibilities, District requirements and School Board policies.

Responsibilities

  • Develops fully-rounded technical competence across Business Office functions through on-the-job training and by serving as functional back-up to assigned roles.
  • Payroll: trains alongside and supports Payroll Accountant to maintain and process employee records in the financial system (e,g, related to base salary schedules, supplemental pay, benefits, eligible leave balances, etc.), Serves as backup to Payroll Accountant by processing portions of the bi-weekly payroll thus ensuring timely and accurate processing of bi-weekly payroll disbursements and completion of a wide range of payroll-related internal and external reporting requirements. Assigns employees to vacant positions within the District’s ERP system as positions are filled. Issues employment contracts and ensure proper documentation is completed. Verifies benefit deduction changes in SERP after Payroll Accountant updates employee records
  • Accounts payable: trains alongside and supports Accounts Payable Specialist with processing invoices reconciling vendor statements, and obtaining outstanding invoices for processing.
  • Accounts Receivable: Prepare and complete district banking deposits accurately and in a timely manner.
  • General Ledger Accounting/ Reconciliation: develops comprehensive understanding of the Uniform Chart of Accounts and Vermont state reporting and auditing requirements. Assists with external bank and internal records reconciliation across a wide range of fund and activity types. Gains ancillary exposure to and assists with deliverables related to other components of the Business Office, including budgeting, state and federal regulatory reporting, and grants management.
  • Assists in the development of functional workflows, written fiscal procedures, and the establishment of timely schedules for assigned functional tasks. Develops process documentation identifying internal controls. Performs internal control testing, and tracks corrective action plans as required.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provides broad exposure to all principal areas of the District’s Business Office functions, preparing for either a generalist, specialist, or technical role within the District.
  • Performing day-to-day functional business tasks, and leveraging this exposure to promote valuable contributions to enhanced processes and procedures, control structures, and continuous improvement plans.
