The Department of Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) is a unique department in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University which addresses important problems in technology and policy. Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Leading the department’s engagements with administrative and academic units across the university to ensure efficiency, compliance, and best practices.
  • Analyzing and presenting financial reports to the department head, College of Engineering (CoE), and others, and ensuring financial data and financial resources are steady and supporting operational and academic requirements.
  • Attending regular CoE Department Administrator (DA) meetings, faculty meetings, staff leadership meetings, Office of Human Resource meetings, and other meetings pertinent to the role.
  • Managing all staff reporting to the position to effectively recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, delegate, and monitor their activities.
  • Ensuring compliance with University, College of Engineering, and departmental policies, and guidelines. This includes approving a vast array and high volume of transactions including Workday, Oracle delegate access, Purchase Orders, Non-Employee Expense Reimbursement, Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance Systems, HR recruiting, Purchasing Card Verification Report, and others for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Directing and leading policy development for departmental programs and university programs administered at the department level.
  • Overseeing and leading the budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the department head.
  • Directly and indirectly supervising all accounting transactions to include purchase orders, P-Card transactions, reimbursements, transfers, journal entries, labor scheduling, recharge center billing, deposits, award processing, donor gift processing, and Workday transactions.
  • Managing the departmental hiring system in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources (OHR) and the College of Engineering.
  • Proactively working to improve business operations as a key academic department within the CoE and the University. Ensure the sharing of information and ideas and facilitate problem solving methods. Engage department, CoE and University stakeholders to identify issues, solutions, and support for continuous improvement.
  • Supervising robust management processes to purchase materials and supplies for research labs, academic programs and events, course buying, and departmental needs.
  • Managing departmental space and facilities by assigning offices, developing and implementing policies for managing shared spaces such as lounges, study areas, conference and other meeting rooms.
  • Updating and implementing all necessary business policies and accounting practices.
  • Understands and respects all roles in the department: faculty, staff, students. Works to ensure success for all.
  • Other duties as assigned.
