The Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection is seeking a Business License Inspector Supervisor to support the department’s mission of protecting the public’s health, safety, and welfare by serving our community through the regulation of businesses. As a Business License Inspector Supervisor, you’ll lead a team of inspectors responsible for enforcing compliance across a wide range of regulated businesses—including marijuana dispensaries, liquor establishments, food vendors, and short-term rentals. This role is ideal for a strategic thinker with a passion for public safety, regulatory enforcement, and team development.

Requirements

  • Previous Regulatory or Licensing Experience: You have a strong background in regulatory enforcement, compliance, or licensing—ideally within a municipal or government setting—and understand how to navigate complex rules, ordinances, and investigative procedures with accuracy and professionalism.
  • High Ethical Standards: You demonstrate integrity, fairness, and sound judgment in all aspects of your work. You uphold the law with consistency and professionalism, and you approach sensitive investigations and enforcement actions with discretion and respect for all parties involved.

  • Education requirement: Graduate from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: Five (5) years’ experience performing investigations and enforcement work on businesses to ensure licenses comply with various codes, rules and regulations.
  • Licensure/Certifications: This job requires driving. Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Regulatory Enforcement & Investigations Conduct and oversee compliance investigations related to code and regulatory policies of various business establishments, including, but not limited to, marijuana, liquor, and tobacco establishments.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and related community concerns at licensed premises, including, but not limited to, short-term rentals and residential rentals. This includes supervision of staff investigating new and renewal short-term rental applications to ensure municipal code compliance.
  • Gather evidence, prepare written reports of investigative findings and prepare cases for enforcement action, including but not limited to issuing notices of violation, administrative citations, and orders to show cause why a license should not be disciplined.
  • Testify in hearings and court proceedings regarding investigations and complaints.
  • Team Leadership & Staff Development Supervise Business License Inspectors conducting compliance investigations across regulated industries and respond to consumer protection complaints, Conduct hiring interviews and select candidates for inspector roles.
  • Provide work instruction, assign tasks, and review work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Evaluate employee performance, provide feedback, and formally document performance.
  • Handle disciplinary actions, resolve grievances, and promote a culture of accountability.
  • Foster teamwork, encourage innovation, and support staff development and coaching.
  • Operational Oversight & Process Management Serve as a subject matter expert in business license enforcement across the department and city.
  • Develop and manage work plans, schedules, and priorities to ensure adequate staff coverage.
  • Monitor unit activities for quality, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Ensure safety measures are followed during inspections and enforcement actions.
  • Work occasional night or weekend shifts to supervise inspectors and participate in compliance monitoring.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration & Innovation Collaborate with other city departments on overlapping inspection responsibilities.
  • Promote regular communication and inform staff of relevant business issues and organizational impacts.
  • Identify and implement process improvements aligned with DLCP’s innovation strategy.
  • Encourage a mindset of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
