About The Position

The Bus Stop Planning and Data Intern will support analytical and planning work in a structured environment under close supervision. The intern will perform a variety of analytical, field-based, and administrative duties in support of bus stop planning, GIS analysis, methodology development, data management, asset tracking, and outreach preparation. This part-time internship is ideal for students interested in public transit, urban planning, GIS, accessibility, asset management, and data-informed infrastructure planning. This role sits within the Bus Stop Program and the Speed & Reliability Program under System Planning & Operational Design division, which focuses on improving system performance through capital improvements, service planning and operational strategies. The intern will support Community Transit's ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of transit operations, update bus stop design standards, maintain accurate inventory information, and inform future bus stop amenity decisions. The role also provides hands-on exposure to how transit planning, operations, and community engagement intersect in a public transit agency. The internship schedule, duration, and work arrangement will be determined based on department needs and student availability and may include both office and field work.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a graduate program in urban planning, transportation, geography, GIS, civil engineering, public policy, data analysis, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted.
  • General computer knowledge, including a basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to operate general office equipment.
  • Basic familiarity with GIS concepts, spatial data, and map-based analysis.
  • Basic understanding of data organization, quality control, and documentation practices.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, or similar GIS tools
  • Experience with Excel, spreadsheets, databases, or data validation tasks

  • Available to work a part-time schedule (25 to 30 hours) during the internship period, with exact hours and dates determined by department needs and student availability.
  • Able to work in an office setting and conduct occasional field visits within the service area as needed.
  • Able to travel to bus stop locations and related field sites for observation, data collection, or coordination activities.

Nice To Haves

  • Intermediate proficiency in GIS, including experience with spatial analysis (e.g., geoprocessing, network analysis)
  • Intermediate proficiency in Excel, including using functions and data analysis.
  • Experience with R Studio (or Python).
  • Interest in field data collection and basic analysis.
  • Familiarity with public transit, bus stop planning, accessibility standards, or streetscape/infrastructure planning.

Responsibilities

  • Support bus stop optimization efforts by reviewing research, analyzing bus stop data using GIS, and helping identify opportunities to improve stop locations, spacing, and customer experience.
  • Help design and support a solar lighting pilot by using GIS analysis and field reviews to select candidate bus stops.
  • Maintain and improve the accuracy of the Bus Stop Inventory (BSI) by performing data quality checks and updates.
  • Assist with analyzing bus stop accessibility using spatial data to inform future planning.
  • Support tracking and analysis of bus stop assets and amenities, such as trash receptacles.
  • Coordinate with the Community Engagement team to prepare materials and organize information for outreach related to Bus Stop and Street Design Guidelines.
