Under general supervision, the school bus driver's greatest responsibility is to transport students to and from school safely and on schedule. The school bus driver is responsible for students on the bus just as the teacher is responsible for students in the classroom. The school bus driver should always drive defensively and be careful not to commit driving errors. The school bus driver performs pre-trip inspections before each trip to find problems that could cause a crash or breakdown. By North Carolina law, every school bus driver must have a valid health certificate. All School Bus Drivers shall possess a CDL Class B with a P and S endorsement, and a school bus certificate. Driver applicant must complete three days of bus class and pass four written tests. After passing all written test the applicant shall complete at least 3 days of roadwork training and pass the Pre-trip inspection test, skill control, and road test. Applicant must have a good driving record, be physically and mentally competent to operate a school bus with ease and have no conviction of a felony within the last 5 years.
