About The Position

Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies is a public regional STEM school serving middle and high school students. Our coaches facilitate learning through hands-on, project- and problem-based instruction that is thoughtfully designed to challenge students. Position Purpose Under general supervision, the Assistant Coach operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the programs and offerings of the school. Work involves performing pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus; operating a bus; obeying all traffic laws and regulations while operating the bus; observing all school policies regarding attendance, safety, and school bus operations; and maintaining discipline of students assigned to ride the bus. The Assistant Coach is also responsible for completing all required reports and securing the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a route. He/she must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel. The Assistant Coach also performs a variety of other duties to support effective and efficient school operations.

Requirements

  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment and demonstrate a positive attitude toward the job.
  • Exhibit a strong customer-service orientation.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with one (1) year of driving experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver’s license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card.
  • Must consistently pass a DOT drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must never have been convicted of a DWI offense, and no traffic violations of any kind within the past three years.
  • Thorough understanding of the school bus laws and procedures described within the North Carolina School Bus Driver Handout.
  • Ability to use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception.
  • Ability to visually inspect small defects and/or small parts as related to bus inspections and other assigned duties.
  • Ability to safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch.
  • Ability and willingness to work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools.
  • Ability to hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels.
  • Ability to use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Previous experience as a school bus driver preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains proficiency in driving skills.
  • Adheres to bus route(s) and shuttle times
  • Completes all required reports and submits all fuel invoices in a timely manner.
  • Ensures safety and care of students boarding, riding, and departing school bus.
  • Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times.
  • Discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations.
  • Transports only authorized students.
  • Reports infractions of school bus safety rules to the Principal or Principal’s designee.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus.
  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; complies with standards of bus cleanliness.
  • Operates the school bus on the assigned route(s) and schedule as provided by the supervisor.
  • Attends all assigned meetings.
  • Informs supervisor of any students added or deleted from the route which may necessitate a change in route or bus stop.
  • Accepts responsibility for securing the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
  • Accepts responsibility for reporting observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus in a timely manner.
  • Maintains acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor such as but not limited to the school lunch program, classroom assistance, and custodial services.
  • Serves as a brand ambassador for the school and, in doing so, models a personal commitment to excellence and strong adherence to the school’s core values through verbal/written communications, behaviors and actions.
  • Follows all rules, policies and procedures of NEAAAT, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to school issues.
