About The Position

To provide safe and efficient transportation on a daily basis so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantages from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular programs.

Requirements

  • Valid Mississippi Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements.
  • Valid Mississippi School Bus Driver Certificate.
  • Must annually pass a regular school bus drivers training course approved by the MS State Board of Education.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be of good moral character, emotionally stable, cheerful, confident and considerate.
  • Must attend and pass a basic First Aid course each year, as required.
  • Such additional health and age requirements as the State and Superintendent may require.
  • Ability to read a limited number of words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or equivalent - preferred
  • Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students.
  • Ability to read and understand maps.
  • Ability to pass Mississippi Department of Transportation training programs and tests.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Responsibilities

  • Obey all traffic laws, rules and regulations for school buses (never goes faster than the law allows, never exceeds 50 MPH on activity trips).
  • Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses (children must always be seated when the bus is starting or stopping).
  • Maintains discipline when students are on the bus as well as when they are loading or unloading (reports undisciplined students to the principals immediately in writing).
  • Keep assigned route bus and/or spare bus clean
  • Keeps to assigned schedule and runs full routes each day schools are in session according to the adopted District school calendar
  • Checks bus daily before each operation for mechanical defects using checksheet.
  • Comes for regular servicing on assigned date at the scheduled time.
  • Immediately notifies the proper authority (Office of Transportation Supervisor 601-636-1478) in case of Mechanical failure or lateness and exercise reasonable care in protecting vehicle
  • Discharges students at authorized stops.
  • Does not stop at stores or other places off the route unless approved in advance by the Office of Transportation Supervisor
  • Exercises responsible leadership when on school activity trips
  • Transports only authorized students on the proper routes
  • Reports all accidents and completes all required accident reports immediately for the Transportation Supervisor
  • Enforces regulations against smoking (including chewing tobacco and snuff) and eating on the bus
