About The Position

The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and courteous transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. This position ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements. The Bus Driver represents the district with professionalism and care, contributing to a positive and safe environment for all students.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
  • Must meet all IDOE, FMCSA, and DOT physical and drug testing requirements.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students of all ages and abilities.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and sound judgment under pressure.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, route sheets, and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Operate school buses and related vehicles safely and efficiently in accordance with all traffic laws and district policies.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure safe vehicle operation and proper maintenance.
  • Report any mechanical issues or safety concerns immediately to the Director of Maintenance & Transportation.
  • Maintain appropriate student discipline on the bus; use calm and respectful communication consistent with district expectations.
  • Assist students with boarding, seating, and exiting the bus as needed; ensure all passengers are properly secured.
  • Follow established routes and time schedules; make adjustments as directed.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records including mileage, student counts, and incident reports.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, school staff, and administrators regarding transportation-related matters.
  • Participate in safety drills, training, and annual certification requirements (CPR/First Aid, bus evacuation drills).
  • Assist with transportation for field trips, extracurricular activities, and emergency evacuations as assigned.
  • Adhere to all district and state safety procedures, including random drug/alcohol testing and annual physicals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance & Transportation.
