About The Position

We're seeking two experienced Building Permit Technicians to support a large municipal office in Altadena. These positions involve assisting with permit applications, processing construction documents, and supporting building and safety operations to ensure compliance with local codes and regulations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Basic requirements of codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of: Basic office procedures, filing, and recordkeeping systems.
  • Knowledge of: Engineering or building/construction activities and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of: State and Federal regulations for hazardous materials and waste handling.
  • Knowledge of: Computerized permit tracking systems, spreadsheets, and procedures.
  • Skill and Ability to: Interpret building records and plans and answer inquiries accurately with tact and courtesy.
  • Skill and Ability to: Work effectively with the public and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Skill and Ability to: Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill and Ability to: Use computer software including chemical databases, office software, and permitting tools.
  • Skill and Ability to: Perform basic file maintenance and arithmetic calculations.
  • Skill and Ability to: Maintain accurate, detailed records.
  • Skill and Ability to: Train and monitor staff when assigned.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
  • Must have a code certification.
  • High School Diploma (required).
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Permit Technician or equivalent, including review of building plans and processing of permit applications using an automated permit tracking system.
  • Experience preferably in an engineering permit office, construction/building code administration, or hazardous materials disclosure program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide public assistance at the counter and over the phone to developers, architects, engineers, and property owners.
  • Issue permits, review plan check applications, and examine plans for code compliance.
  • Process maps, plans, invoices, deposits, and fees with accuracy.
  • Perform fee calculations, track payments, and prepare monthly/quarterly/annual reports.
  • Direct inquiries to appropriate staff and assist with planning and development applications.
  • Assist with preparation of legal documents, maps, charts, graphs, and presentation materials.
  • Conduct land use field surveys, tabulate and map results.
  • Use and update automated permit processing systems.
  • May train, guide, or monitor the work of administrative staff.
