About The Position

The Tennessee School for the Blind is seeking a Building Maintenance Worker, to work under general supervision, and be responsible for leading and participating in a variety of tasks including carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, masonry and general mechanical repair work.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Experience equivalent to three (3) years of full-time increasingly skilled labor and trade work including at least two (2) years in building maintenance work.

  • Knowledge: Basic knowledge of Building and Construction Basic knowledge of Design principles Basic knowledge of Mechanical principles Basic knowledge of Public Safety and Security Basic knowledge of Hand and Power Tools
  • Ability: Oral Comprehension Problem Sensitivity Near Vision Selective Attention
  • Selected applicants will be required to submit to and pass a TBI/FBI background check and fingerprinting, to include Tennessee and Federal criminal history checks, child abuse records, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks.
  • Please note, due to the position being located at a school, any discrepancies in the background check or fingerprinting report will result in the candidate being disqualified from consideration.

  • Certification in building maintenance job skills is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritizing daily tasks and activities to meet operational requirements.
  • Operating and utilizing a variety of tools and equipment such as assorted hand and power tools, plungers, sewer rodders, drills, skill saws, and grinders.
  • Identifying maintenance issues in order to repair/resolve issues or reporting issues to someone who can repair/resolve them.
  • Inspecting devices such as electrical systems, basic plumbing, mechanical systems (i.e., HVAC, laundry, and food service equipment), removing and replacing defective parts to determine necessary repairs.
  • Performing routine repairs on standard work equipment.
  • Rewiring electrical outlets and breaker boxes.
  • Performing routine electrical tasks such as replacing light bulbs, ballasts, low voltage transformers, power poles, receptacles, and wall switches.
  • Repairing windows, doors, flooring, woodwork, drywall or other parts of building structures.
  • Performing basic carpentry tasks such as repairing doors, gates, broken windows, and installing bulletin boards, hanging drywall, building walls, minor roofing repair, building shelving, and caulking.
  • Policing grounds.
  • Performing minor HVAC repair such as changing belts, filters, or motors.
  • Performing minor construction projects.
  • Performing plumbing tasks such as unstopping commodes, replacing fixtures, drains, and repairing leaks.
  • Performing landscaping tasks such as planting flowers, mowing, sharpening mower blades, and changing mower oil and oil filters.
  • Performing janitorial tasks such as floor buffing, mopping, power washing, wall cleaning, vent cleaning, sink and mirror cleaning, supply restocking, and shampooing carpet.
  • Performing basic to extended work in welding.
  • Reviewing preventative maintenance plans in order to perform routine preventative maintenance to ensure equipment continues to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and/or the physical condition of building does not deteriorate.
  • Performing daily walk through/inspection of facilities to ensure proper working order.
  • Assisting in performing inventory of work-related supplies and materials.
  • Providing direction and oversight to others as needed.
  • Reporting to supervisor the inventory of cleaning supplies, repair tools, or replacement parts.
  • Reading work orders, receiving instructions from supervisors, or previous shift workers to determine work requirements.
  • Communicating with outside vendors and customers to provide basic customer service and direct persons to appropriate solutions and answers.
  • May operate state issued pick-up truck, golf cart, watercraft, or other vehicles.
  • Performing repair work using diagrams, drawings, or maintenance manuals.
  • Assisting supervisor in determining supplies or materials needed to perform work activities.
  • Moving objects such as large furniture, filing cabinets, cubicles, chairs, desks, and bookshelves.
  • Restocking maintenance supplies.
  • Setting up cubicle spaces, conference rooms, and areas for special events.
  • Recording routine reports of time expended, and materials used.
  • Using human resources software to enter time worked and leave requests.
