About The Position

The purpose of this position is to inspect structures to ensure that all trades and construction comply with building, zoning and municipal codes. This is accomplished by reviewing requests, assisting with reviewing and interpreting plans, inspecting structures and projects, testing construction materials, meeting with contractors, builders and homeowners, enforcing codes; and issuing permits. Other duties include responding to requests, answering inquiries, researching codes, coordinating work with all inspectors, Inspection of construction complaints and other violations of City zoning and construction ordinances, filing and maintaining documentation and solving problems through knowledge and certifications with the International Code Council, State of Texas and knowledge of local ordinance requirements gained through on the job training.

Requirements

  • Driver's License Required - Y Type - C Endorsements - N/A
  • Must be able to obtain a Residential Building Inspector ICC certification within one year of hire into the position.
  • Experience-Related Requirements Over two years and up to and including four years.
  • Requires High school graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college

Responsibilities

  • Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice.
  • Inspects structures for compliance with the International Residential, Building, Plumbing, Electric, Gas, Mechanical, and Energy codes, and with City ordinances and state laws. Reviews plans for code compliance, interprets codes, investigates complaints of unauthorized installations or hazards, approves or denies the installation of construction materials, and provides additional information to site owners and construction personnel.
  • Maintains records and documents on all inspections and investigations by recording progress of construction work, reviewing and comparing estimates from contractors, preparing reports, entering information, and maintaining records and documents.
  • Reviews plans, applications and other requests by answering customer inquiries and providing information, conferring with architects, contractors, engineers, builders and homeowners, explaining codes and ordinances, observing violations and construction while driving and scheduling inspections.
  • Responds to phone and walk-in requests by providing information on programs and services, answering specific inspection questions and recording inspection requests.
  • Maintains residential and irrigation plans, and issues permits.
  • Specializes in multiple of the following inspection types: Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC/ Mechanical, Structural, Roofing, Backflow, or other inspections of construction to ensure compliance with local and State adopted Building Codes
