About The Position

Performs intermediate technical work inspecting housing conditions inside and outside of structures, enforcing city codes, assisting citizens with code related inquires, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Infrastructure and Development Building Commissioner.

  • High School diploma or GED, and moderate experience in the building industry, inspections, state or local building codes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of Indiana.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects residential, commercial building and swimming pools for code compliance to all State and local regulations. applies building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, handicap, swimming pool codes; applies state regulations and local zoning ordinances.
  • Conducts regular inspections of residential housing to ensure structures meet minimum housing codes; makes recommendations to authorities and property owners to correct violations as they occur; advises citizens of community resources available to them; initiates contact to ensure correction of violations, including telephone calls and correspondence.
  • Inspects electrical systems for code compliance to have connection to power company.
  • Reviews plans for structures both class 1 and class 2 structures.
  • Investigates housing complaints for compliance with the housing code and structural regulations.
  • Updates inspection results, re-schedule inspections and issue letters of noncompliance if necessary.
  • Attends meetings as required, meets with Fire Department, Health Department, and Child Welfare to discuss inspection and violation information.
  • Works with Building Commissioner and Unsafe Building Commission to address unsafe building issues and maintains working knowledge of Unsafe Building Law outlined in local and State code.
  • Issues tickets to violators for code non-compliance; appears in court as requested by City Attorney.
  • Maintains files and records of all investigated complaints and corrective action taken; prepares a variety of required reports
  • Prepares inspection reports to submit to Building Commissioner.
