About The Position

Building Inspector Series (I, II, and III) The City of Tucson is accepting applications for the position of BUILDING INSPECTOR I, II, and III to fill multiple vacancies in the planning and Development Services Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months. J2553 - Building Inspector I (Compensation Grade 105, $21.96 - $32.94 USD Hourly) The Building Inspector I position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department assists in conducting building inspections for construction, manufactured buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment, and systems to ensure conformance to building codes, plans, and regulatory standards. This position assists in reviewing plans and completing building inspection reports in an online permitting system and participates in the Building Inspection Trainee Program. J2554 - Building Inspector II (Compensation Grade 106, $24.16 - $36.24 USD Hourly) The Building Inspector II position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department conducts residential building inspections for construction, manufactured buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment, and systems to ensure conformance to building codes, plans, and regulatory standards. Reviews residential plans and completes building inspection reports in an online permitting system. This position participates in the Building Inspection Trainee Program. J2555 - Building Inspector III (Compensation Grade 107, $26.57 - $39.86 USD Hourly) The Building Inspector III position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department conducts residential and commercial building inspections for construction, manufactured buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment, and systems to ensure conformance to building codes, plans, and regulatory standards. This position reviews residential and commercial plans and completes building inspection reports in an online permitting system. This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of Residential Building Inspection personnel.

Requirements

  • Building Inspector I Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: No experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licenses and Certifications Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division. The International Code Council (ICC) Inspection Certification must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Building Inspector II Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licenses and Certifications Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division Any two (2) International Code Council (ICC) Residential Certifications.
  • Building Inspector III Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Licenses and Certifications Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License - Arizona Department of Transportation - Motor Vehicle Division. International Code Council (ICC) Combination Residential Inspector Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Building Inspector I: 1-2 years of building construction experience. Bilingual English and Spanish.
  • Building Inspector II: Bilingual English and Spanish.
  • Building Inspector III: Four (4) years of inspecting residential and commercial properties for compliance with building codes and specifications or journeyman level experience in one of the building construction trades.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts building inspections, both in person and via video, for new and existing residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance with City of Tucson adopted building codes (ICC codes), regulations, ordinances, policies, and approved construction documents. Inspections cover plumbing, electrical, mechanical, structural, energy, accessibility, and other building systems. Records deficiencies for follow-up inspections.
  • Reads, interprets, and reviews blueprints and technical construction documents to verify construction conforms to approved plans and applicable codes.
  • Maintains accurate inspection records by entering data and comments into the City’s permitting system.
  • Follows up with customers via phone or email regarding inspection results and inquiries.
  • Provides guidance, clarification, education, and training to residential inspectors, monitors progress, reviews reports, and recommends improvements to processes and practices.
  • Investigates and resolves complex customer complaints and permit issues, coordinating with customers and, when necessary, outside agencies while maintaining professionalism and integrity.
  • Assists with scheduling inspections, entering inspection data, and communicating with permit holders.
  • Seeks supervisor guidance as needed.
  • Monitors assigned City vehicle maintenance, ensures proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is used and maintained, and enforces safety protocols in the office and field.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
