About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Building & Grounds Superintendent, the Building & Grounds Supervisor is responsible for the planning, organization, and implementation of day-to-day activities in carrying out a variety of maintenance tasks. This position functions as the supervisor for all full-time and student maintenance staff across all University Housing facilities (Sandburg Residence Halls, Cambridge Commons, Riverview, and Kenilworth Square Apartments) consisting of over 1 million square feet of space with an academic year population of around 4,300 residents. The individual must be capable of making independent decisions involving the mechanical and maintenance functions. Physical Requirements: Ability to climb ladders or steps to access equipment. Must have sufficient vision to read directions, diagrams, and to adjust equipment. Must be able to lift and carry items over 60 pounds. Must not be affected by heights or closed areas. Must have sufficient physical dexterity to work on, under, and around equipment. Must have the ability to bend, reach, and kneel. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Work in mechanical rooms, roofs, and small spaces. Hot or cold temperatures and wet areas. Outside during inclement weather, including assisting with snow and ice removal. Cautionary areas in relation to sensitive repairs or problem diagnosis. Work/interact with college students and administrators. Late night/weekend phone calls with some requiring immediate on-site response. Onsite service for large events and emergency response.

Requirements

  • Experience as a maintenance mechanic or related field.
  • Experience working as a supervisor or lead.
  • Ability to work on weekends when necessary.
  • Availability to work overtime.
  • Hold a valid Driver’s license that meets UW Risk Management standards.
  • High school diploma.
  • Proficiency in common business productivity software and applications (e.g., MS Office Suite, email, internet, etc.).
  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire alarm systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Ability to work with a large diverse staff.
  • Ability to provide good customer service in a professional manner to the University community and be a model representative of University Housing.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree or higher from a 2-year college or tech school with a certificate in HVAC and/or similar applicable training as received in a military service school.
  • Facility Operating Engineer – 3rd class license.
  • Experience with computerized climate control systems.
  • Professional experience in a 24/7/365 operation performing HVAC and/or maintenance responsibilities.
  • Previous on-call experience.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates unit goals and objectives, implements unit operational policies and procedures, and provides training and feedback to ensure safety and compliance
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for the completion of established projects
  • Develops and schedules unit operational work plans
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
